BOSTON, April 21, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Saturday, April 22, 2017, City Year will once again join forces with Comcast NBCUniversal for the 16th annual Comcast Cares Day. More than 700 City Year AmeriCorps Members and staff will participate in Comcast Cares Days projects that will help revitalize and brighten 11 cities across the country including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Jacksonville, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Miami, New Hampshire, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Last year, Comcast Cares Day brought together more than 100,000 volunteers to support more than 900 projects in 21 countries.
Comcast Cares Day is Comcast NBCUniversal's celebration of its year-round commitment to service and has grown into the nation's largest single-day corporate volunteer effort. Since the event began in 2001, volunteers have contributed nearly 5 million hours of service at 7,700 projects and Comcast NBCUniversal has provided more than $20 million in grants to local non-profit community partners.

Projects taking place this Saturday include:
Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Boston, MA, where more than 350 volunteers will serve alongside City Year AmeriCorps Members to brighten spaces for students by painting common areas and educational murals, as well as building an outdoor seating area for learning. In addition, volunteers will pack supply kits for students and teachers. Comcast NBCUniversal also sponsors a team of City Year AmeriCorps members at the Burke High School, who support the school's 530 students through tutoring, mentoring and school-wide support.
North Hollywood High School, Los Angeles, CA, where nearly 450 volunteers will serve alongside City Year AmeriCorps Members to paint murals, create college-themed stairwells, and other projects to enhance school pride throughout the campus for more than 2,800 students.
John Hayden Johnson Middle School in Washington, DC, where nearly 400 volunteers will serve alongside City Year AmeriCorps Members to transform unused classrooms into school partnership spaces, paint murals throughout the school, and beautify courtyard spaces with garden boxes, picnic tables, and additional landscaping. Comcast NBCUniversal also sponsors a team of City Year AmeriCorps members at John Hayden Johnson Middle School, who support the school's 191 students through tutoring, mentoring and school-wide support.

As one of City Year's National Strategic Partners for more than 16 years, Comcast NBCUniversal has donated more than $85 million in cash and in-kind support to City Year. Comcast NBCUniversal sponsors 12 teams of City Year AmeriCorps members serving in 11 cities across the country. These teams will serve more than 200,000 hours this year to provide tutoring, mentoring and additional support to more than 9,000 students.
In addition to serving on Comcast Cares Day, Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteer their time to educate more than 1,500 City Year AmeriCorps members through career and leadership development trainings during their year of service.
