Climate Scientists and Policy Leaders Gather for California Climate Change Symposium on August 24-25
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The program has been finalized for the "California Climate Change Symposium 2015: Using Climate Science to Plan For a Resilient Future," August 24-25 at the Sacramento Convention Center. At the two-day symposium, co-hosted by the California Natural Resources Agency, the California Environmental Protection Agency, the Governor's Office of Planning and Research, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate scientists and policy-makers will share cutting-edge research addressing the impacts of climate change.
A few highlights:
- High-level opening plenary with representatives from the office of Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., IPCC, and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
- Keynote presentation by Anthony Barnosky and Elizabeth Hadly, lead authors of "Maintaining Humanity's Life Support Systems," which was produced at the request of Governor Brown.
- Panel on "Water Resources in California: Drought, Extreme Events, and Management Options," involving discussion of the role of climate change in drought and flood.
- Keynote presentation by Susanne Moser on "Translating Climate Change Science into Effective Action." Dr. Moser contributed to Working Group II of the IPCC's Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports and served as Review Editor on the IPCC's Special Report on "Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation."
- Plenary panel moderated by California Natural Resources Secretary John Laird involving state legislators as well as CalPERS officials on "Forging and Facilitating Adaptation Policy in California."
- Plenary panel moderated by California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Matthew Rodriquez involving international governmental representatives as well as IPCC scientists in a "Conversation about International Adaptation Activities and Potential Opportunities for Coordination/Collaboration."
Additionally, the IPCC will give a media workshop for members of the press at 8 a.m. on August 24 to discuss its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Released between September 2013 and November 2014, AR5 will provide a roadmap for negotiators when they gather in Paris this coming December to hammer out a global agreement to curb climate change. Its findings also inform local and regional climate initiatives, including those in California.
