Building the next generation of technology for courts
NEW YORK, Sept. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Clio, the global leader in legal AI, today announced the acquisition of Learned Hand, an AI company building technology specifically for judges and courts. The acquisition marks Clio's first direct expansion into the judiciary.
AI is rapidly changing the economics of legal work, enabling lawyers to research, analyze, draft, and prepare filings in a fraction of the time while giving legal professionals increasingly powerful tools to navigate legal problems without representation. That increase in capacity is driving more work through the legal system, while the courts responsible for resolving it remain a critical bottleneck.

Learned Hand has already begun that work. The company has built an AI workspace specifically for judges and clerks that connects with court case management systems and helps them understand the matters before them, work through filings and disputed issues, conduct legal research, and prepare bench memoranda and draft orders tailored to the procedural requirements of each matter.
Learned Hand's technology is already being used by courts across the United States, including the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, the nation's largest trial court.
Building for both sides of the legal system
Courts sit at the center of the legal system, where disputes are resolved and legal precedent is made. They set the rules and deadlines that shape matters, receive the filings that move them forward, and produce the decisions that lawyers rely on every day.
Clio has built across more of that system. Court calendaring and rules help keep matters on track, electronic filing moves work into the courts, Clio Docket brings court records and filings into legal workflows, and Clio Library gives legal professionals access to the law they rely on to understand and act on those records. Together, these capabilities have given Clio a growing view into how legal work moves through the courts and where technology can have the greatest impact next
In August, Pablo Arredondo, co-founder of Casetext and a pioneer in legal AI, joined Clio as Senior Vice President, Judiciary. In September, Clio announced that former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack would join as General Manager, Judiciary, bringing nearly a decade on the bench and firsthand experience with how courts operate.
Learned Hand adds a product and team already working inside that environment. Founder and CEO Shlomo Klapper and his team have built alongside judges and court systems, designing technology around judicial workflows rather than adapting products created for lawyers.

Grounded in legal and court data
The acquisition brings Learned Hand together with Clio's legal and court data. Clio Library spans more than one billion legal documents across more than 110 jurisdictions, while Clio Docket draws on approximately one billion U.S. court records and filings. Together, they create the foundation for judicial technology grounded in authoritative law and informed by the record before the court.
