CMPort to Build on Century-old Philanthropic Legacy via Specialized Training Program
SHENZHEN, China, Oct. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The dedication of major state-owned corporations to social welfare on a global scale has once again been put on display as China's largest public port operator, China Merchants Port Holdings Company Ltd., is set to announce the newest edition of C Blue, an innovative training program developed in response to the "Belt & Road" Initiative, for the second time since its initial launch in September, 2016.
With the program's 2017 return, China Merchants Port, or "CMPort", whose global portfolio spans over 15 countries and regions, will work in conjunction with co-organizer Shenzhen Polytechnic, a specialized college located in the Province of Guangdong, to equip trainees from around the world with industry-specific expertise. C Blue, which owes its enchanting title to the Chinese phrase for "shaping our blue dream", will "offer foreign countries the environment, resources, and platform they need to nurture top leadership talents", according to the program's promotional material.
C Blue is hardly the first project its corporate organizer has carried out for a social cause. China Merchants Group, CMPort's parent company, boasts a long-standing philanthropic tradition dating all the way back to the late 19th-century, when it first set out to perform public service on behalf of the Qing Government amid the Self-Strengthening Movement; now a leading international conglomerate, the group continues to fulfill its corporate social responsibility primarily through China Merchants Charitable Foundation, one of its youngest establishments.
Backed by the foundation's financial resources and nonprofit agenda, China Merchants subsidiaries across various business sectors are rapidly expanding their social influence. CMPort, for instance, has been able to complement C Blue's educational contributions with much-needed medical services: in 2015, the same team behind the training program also introduced a healthcare project in Sri Lanka, where eye surgery has been performed at local hospitals on more than 400 patients who would otherwise go untreated due to financial difficulties.
C Blue, nevertheless, signals an important and exciting new direction for CMPort's social endeavors, thanks to a groundbreaking marriage between the conventional CSR model and the company's corporate mission. While the new program, like other social projects, lives up to its charitable nature through social welfare, it equally serves the port operator's global business strategy by interacting with cross-industry personnel from key foreign countries, who are expected to help facilitate CMPort's business activities within those locations.
Compared to its 2016 debut, C Blue's sophomore edition promises a more diverse audience as well as more interactive sessions with added cultural experiences. Participants from 13 countries - almost doubling the previous year's statistic - will be presented with a training-based curriculum "that covers multiple areas such as port operations, shipping, logistics, accounting, and free-trade zone development, along with special sessions that explores, among other themes, traditional Chinese culture and China's development history," suggests one of the program's admission guides. During their month-long stay, selected executives and employees from various sectors will look to gain valuable insights into the nation's port industry and general economic landscape through lectures, field trips, and company tours.
Speaking at its original opening ceremony back in 2016, Bai Jingtao, Managing Director of China Merchants Port, foresaw the program's profound implications when he described it as "the window to the Chinese port industry". "C Blue is CMPort's response to the Belt & Road Initiative introduced by our government," Dr. Bai said in his speech. "It highlights a sustainable development strategy focused on the nurture of international talent."
The program is scheduled to officially kick off at its opening ceremony in Shenzhen on October 16, 2017.
