Coalition of Over 100 Businesses and Nonprofit Organizations Launches 'Alternate Black Friday'
On Shop for Good Sunday, shoppers purchase gifts from socially responsible brands while generating funds for charity
BOSTON, Nov. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans spend over $1 trillion buying holiday gifts each year. What if a fraction of those resources could also help reduce poverty or fight climate change?
This year they can, through a campaign called Shop for Good Sunday. Shop for Good Sunday, the Sunday after Thanksgiving (this year, November 25), is the alternative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the day dedicated to shopping with socially responsible brands. ShopForGoodSunday.com makes it easy for shoppers to get holiday gifts from companies that empower workers, pay good wages, and use eco-friendly business practices.
Revenue generated through the Shop for Good Sunday gift shop on November 25 will be donated to RAINN, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization.
Many participating brands are also offering special Shop for Good Sunday discounts.
Over 100 businesses and nonprofit organizations are partnering for the Shop for Good Sunday campaign, including: 1% for the Planet, Oxfam, the Social Enterprise Alliance, Rainforest Alliance, Mashable, Avocado Green Mattress, Mpowerd, the Mastercard Charity Charge card and many more.
All partner organizations are engaging in a coordinated campaign to promote Shop for Good Sunday, and the broader idea that consumers have tremendous power to make a positive impact during the holiday season (and all year round) by directing their purchases to companies with ethical and sustainable business practices. The campaign runs through November 25.
"The dollars we all spend are the world's greatest force for change," said Cullen Schwarz, founder of DoneGood, the startup that created the Shop for Good Sunday concept. "If even a fraction of the $1 trillion we all spend on holiday gives can also reduce poverty, fight climate change, make the world better, the impact is huge."
"We're proud to join a movement like Shop for Good Sunday. It represents a forwarding-thinking ideal of using business as a force for good," said Jay Decker, Co-Founder of Avocado Green Mattress.
"We work to support companies and individuals creating a healthier planet, and there's no better time to help than during the holiday season," said Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet.
Shop for Good Sunday was founded in 2017 by DoneGood, a Boston-based social enterprise Forbes called "The Amazon of social good."
