Codenvy Donates Cloud Extension Platform to Eclipse Foundation
Eclipse Che, Part of Eclipse Cloud Development Top Level Project
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Codenvy today announced Eclipse Che, an open source project that contains Codenvy's cloud extension platform. Eclipse Che provides the development community with a platform to build cloud plug-ins that orchestrate developer workflows. Architected like Eclipse RCP, Che allows contributors to create centralized cloud development systems that can automate the routine tasks of creating projects, instantiating build and debug environments, editing code, and managing developer environments.
Eclipse Che is a member of the Eclipse Cloud Development (ECD) Top Level Project, announced today. The ECD combines Che (Codenvy), Orion (IBM), Flux (Pivotal) and Dirigible (SAP) to create the technologies, platforms and tools necessary to enable the delivery of highly integrated cloud development and cloud developer environments. Codenvy has joined the Eclipse Foundation as a strategic member, is taking a board seat, and is part of the ECD project management committee.
Codenvy has contributed both source code and test cases, and is using Eclipse Che as the foundation of its flagship offering - the Codenvy Developer Environment Cloud, available now as SaaS or for on-premises deployment.
"Eclipse is the largest open source foundation for development tools. The formation of Eclipse Cloud Development demonstrates Eclipse's leadership in advancing developer solutions for enterprise," said Tyler Jewell, CEO and founder of Codenvy. "By creating the Eclipse Che project, Codenvy is committed to working with Eclipse contributors and vendor members to develop an ecosystem for cloud development."
Eclipse Che is an SDK, IDE, set of APIs, a set of plug-ins, and an enterprise cloud system for running many environments at scale with security. Built on industry standards (Java, JavaScript and RESTful APIs), Che works with any database, any application server, any development toolset and process and any application architecture. By donating the source code and test cases, Codenvy is making the first complete enterprise development environment and platform available in open source and to the greater developer community.

Quotes
- Patrice Lamarque, Head of Products at eXo: I'm glad to see Eclipse making the move to cloud based developer environments with Che, as this will help development teams to be more efficient: no more complex development environments to set up, the ability to reach a development context in just a few clicks, basically from anywhere. And as importantly, the ability to have all the tools you need right there to code, build, deploy, debug, etc... This is truly disruptive and definitely is the future of development.
- Kin Lane, API Evangelist: Every aspect of application development is moving into the cloud making things more modular and scalable. It is good to see efforts out there like Codenvy, and their work with the Eclipse Foundation to include APIs for developer environments, as they evolve in the cloud. Now developers will be able to have exactly the tools they need, in a modular, containerized, and customizable environment that runs anywhere, and doesn't just outperform the desktop experience, but truly scales as developers now expect throughout the application development lifecycle.
