Colorado Technical University Announces 50 Recipients of Fifth Annual Scholarships for Wounded Warriors, Veterans and Spouses

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Nov. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As Americans honor those who serve our country this Veterans Day, Colorado Technical University (CTU) is recognizing the sacrifices of 25 wounded active duty and veteran service members and 25 spouses of wounded service members with the gift of education.

CTU today announced the 50 recipients of the fifth annual 2013 CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarship and Wounded Warrior Spouse Scholarship programs. The scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, course materials and fees, as well as a new laptop computer.

In its fifth year, the CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarship program is a collaboration between CTU and the non-profit Yellow Ribbon Fund to offer educational assistance to wounded service members and wounded veterans who fought in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as spouses of wounded warriors.  Since 2008, CTU has provided 250 scholarships worth nearly $5 million.

"With nearly 50,000 military members injured in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan to-date, we're proud to have supported our wounded service members and their families through the CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarship program over the past five years," said James Hendrickson, vice president of military education at CTU. "As more troops come home, CTU is passionate about helping prepare these military families as they face new challenges at home by providing them with higher education opportunities."

The recipients were selected by an independent selection board consisting of representatives from the academic and military communities, including wounded warrior Maj. Justin Constantine, USMC Reserve and Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, U.S. Army (Ret.). Of the 25 CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarship recipients, 21 served in the Army and four served in the Air Force.

Of the 25 CTU Wounded Warrior Spouse Scholarship recipients, four of the spouses also have husbands who received a Wounded Warrior Scholarship this year – meaning they will be attending CTU at the same time as their spouse.

All CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarship and CTU Wounded Warrior Spouse Scholarship recipients pursue their degrees online, allowing students to take classes from anywhere in the world.  The award-winning* virtual campus at CTU offers a positive environment for recovering service members and veterans to begin and continue their education as they recover.  Additionally, the virtual campus provides an opportunity for CTU Wounded Warrior Spouse Scholarship recipients to visit and care for their spouses as they recover without interrupting their studies.
