Comfort Insurance Looks at the Changes to the Insurance Industry

Leading motorhome insurance provider Comfort Insurance looks at the future changes in the insurance industry as we move into 2014.  

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently reported that the UK insurance industry is the third largest in the world and the largest in Europe, so it is not surprising that changes continue to occur quickly in order for the industry to grow and develop.

One change that has been announced is that there will no longer be a need for the paper counterpart of driving licences as the government plans to move all driving records online. This means that insurance premiums for motorists could fall.

Ben Cue, Head of Operations at Comfort Insurance says: "Insurers can't currently check any motoring conviction details or our customer's licence details so we have to add in these factors in our pricing as we do not know if motorhome owners tell the truth about their driving history or give us the incorrect details by mistake."

The paper counterpart to the driving license is due to be phased out by mid-2015.

Another major change in the industry which was announced last year was the merger of the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) and the VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency). The new agency who will be responsible for maintaining vehicle standards is now the DVSA (the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency) which will become official in April 2014.

The Department for Transport says that the DVSA will bring together the standards services and testing to deliver a more efficient service.

Ben says that the merger should make motoring services and testing easier for drivers to follow. He explains, "Having all services in one place should be more efficient for both the agency and drivers, which could potentially reduce the costs involved."

The changes for 2014 sound positive for both insurers and drivers so far, although it is difficult to determine how far-reaching their impacts will be until they are established for a considerable period of time.
