WASHINGTON, April 28, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To end a disease that takes the life of an American man every 20 minutes, nearly 40 communities across the nation will unite by hosting ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk events. In 2016, the Run/Walk series celebrates 10 years of raising awareness and funds to end prostate cancer, a disease that will affect more than 180,000 American men this year alone.
"Raising awareness and funds at local events like the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk is an important way to ensure other men and families don't have to suffer because of prostate cancer." said Col. Paul Taylor, prostate cancer patient and ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk – Capital Area participant.
Col. Paul Taylor was set to deploy to Afghanistan in 2012 when he was diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer. The 41-year-old husband and father to three girls tackled the disease head on, all while continuing to remain in command of a squadron with more than 700 soldiers. He continues to bravely battle prostate cancer and has become a staunch advocate to end the disease and a resource for other men and families facing cancer. Since his diagnosis, he's captained a team and participated in the Capital Area Run/Walk for the past two years and joined ZERO's Board of Directors where he serves as a spokesman to raise awareness.
"For the past 10 years, the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk has rallied communities and given participants a voice in the fight to end prostate cancer," said ZERO CEO Jamie Bearse. "By mobilizing survivors, patients, caregivers, families, and businesses in communities across the country to raise funds and awareness, we can make prostate cancer a national priority."
The ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk Series is hosted by ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer and its local partners, such as urology practices and oncology centers, in nearly 40 cities across the U.S. From Washington, DC to Los Angeles. The events have a family-friendly focus, and most consist of a 5K run, a 1 mile walk, and a Kids Superhero Dash for Dad. National sponsors include Abbvie, Bayer, Astellas, Medivation, Tolmar, Genomic Health, Hanna Andersson. Metamark, Janssen, and Vituro Health.
New to the series this year, ZERO launched a state-of-the-art fundraising website where participants can easily register and ask family and friends to support them in their efforts to end prostate cancer. The Run/Walk series hopes to raise more than $3M to provide prostate cancer resources and support for local men and families across the nation through our new regional chapters. Funds also support national efforts to provide research for new treatments, patient support resources, and to educate men about prostate cancer.
