Community Paramedicine Pilot Project Launches in Southwest Ohio
Program's Telemedicine Kit Will Improve Patient Health and Reduce Costs
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio, Nov. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Atrium Medical Center (Atrium) has teamed with the Monroe, Ohio Fire Department, Miami University Oxford, and HNC Virtual Solutions to launch a community paramedicine pilot project in southwest Ohio.
The program aims to minimize visits to the Atrium emergency room, as it allows Monroe community paramedics and emergency medical technicians to visit patients with chronic debilitating illness who frequently call 911 in their home. The medics will then be able to evaluate patients' current health condition and communicate to the clinical care team at Atrium virtually through a telemedicine kit custom-built by HNC Virtual Solutions.
In addition, Miami University will partner with Monroe paramedics by having students in the social work program help evaluate the patients' conditions and compile clinical data that will help hospital administrators understand the efficacy of this pilot project.
"Not only is the patient's health and prognosis proactively improved through this revolutionary approach, but healthcare costs will be reduced, and the hospital's existing healthcare delivery system will be enhanced by freeing up further resources to respond to more significant medical emergencies," said Julian Shaya, HNC Virtual Solutions executive vice president. "This virtual solutions tool is a game changer for healthcare."
Community Paramedicine, otherwise known as Mobile Integrated Health, is an emerging sub-category of Emergency Medical Services that seeks to observe and maintain the health and well-being of patients prone to debilitating chronic illness directly in the patients' home. Rather than respond in their traditional emergency role, paramedics see a targeted patient population in a non-emergent setting, implementing a systematic clinical methodology. Working in tandem with a clinical care team consisting of doctors and nurses from a local hospital, they employ a host of tele-communication tools that enable them to evaluate those identified patients. This provides the patients' care team with health insights that otherwise would be difficult in an emergency setting.
