The alfresco Rickie Rocks concert on the Caltech grounds is highlighted by Rickie Lee Jones accompanied by full orchestra (a rare experience for audience-goers), while Amy Madigan lends her dramatic talent to the exploration of Woody Guthrie's life and impact. The program also features original works by three Los Angeles composers.
PASADENA, Calif., Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On August 18, 2012, Rachael Worby and MUSE/IQUE continue the outdoor Summer Series at Caltech with the program titled, Rickie Rocks, featuring two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Rickie Lee Jones.
Worby, MUSE/IQUE's Artistic Director and Conductor, has curated a program that mashes-up some of America's legendary songwriters and songs while drawing a musical lineage line that honors music's progression through the years.
For her first performance with a full orchestra, Jones will lend her unique vocal styling to such Broadway favorites as "On the Street Where You Live" (from My Fair Lady), Kurt Weill's "September Song" (Knickerbocker Holiday); Leonard Bernstein (music)/Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) collaborations "America" and "Jet Song" (West Side Story) as well as Jones' signature rendition of "My Funny Valentine" (Babes in Arms).
As part of the centennial celebration of the birth of Woody Guthrie, Worby will conduct the MUSE/IQUE orchestra and members of the Los Angeles Children's Chorus in performances of the U.S. and South Africa national anthems. Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," which many consider the U.S.' unofficial national anthem, will also be performed, honoring the centennial celebration of the singer-songwriter's birth this year. Madigan (HBO's "Carnivale" and "Field of Dreams") will offer a dramatic reading from Guthrie's classic 1943 book, Bound for Glory.
The concert will also highlight works by three Los Angeles composers: "Different Lanes" inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's films "North by Northwest" and "Psycho" by Laura Karpman; "Overture to a Comic Book Hero" by Daniel Chan; and "Best Unsaid" by Michael Brooks. Jacqueline Emerson ("Hunger Games") will make her orchestral debut in "Peter Pan."
Other works from artists, arrangers and composers including Gil Evans, Scott Joplin, Bernard Hermann, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and John Williams will also be featured.
The concert will culminate with a tribute to the late Astronaut Sally Ride in a performance of "The Mood is Made of Gold," written by Rickie Lee Jones' father.
