Congressman Bill Archer to Deliver Keynote Speech at February 2014 Tax Council Policy Institute's Tax Symposium

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tax Council Policy Institute (TCPI) announced today that the Honorable Bill Archer, former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee will deliver one of the two keynote speeches at its 15^th Annual Tax Policy and Practice Symposium, to be held Feb. 19-20 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C.  Jason Furman, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, will be the second keynote speaker.  The symposium will feature a full slate of speakers and panel discussions featuring eminent tax authorities in government, private sector and academia.

Archer represented the state of Texas for 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, including serving as chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means from 1995 until his retirement in 2001.  As chairman, Archer played a key role in the passage of numerous tax and non-tax measures, including the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, two landmark bills.  The Taxpayer Relief Act, subject to certain phase-in rules, lowered capital gains rates and exempted from taxation profits on the sale of a personal residence up to set limits for married couples filing jointly and for singles. Over the course of his legislative career, Archer championed free trade, helped ease the inheritance tax, expanded IRAs, passed a $500 per child tax credit for middle-income Americans and pushed for pro-taxpayer initiatives, such as the IRS Reform and Restructuring Act of 1998 and Taxpayer Bill of Rights legislation.

A native Texan, Archer received his BBA and LLB degrees with honors from The University of Texas at Austin.  He is the namesake of The University of Texas System's Archer Center in Washington, DC, designed to "educate the next generation of leaders from Texas for service in local, state, federal, and international service."  The Center is known for its prestigious Bill Archer Fellowship program, which bring students through the UT System to Washington for a semester of classes and internships.  He is now a senior policy advisor at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

TCPI's 15^th Annual Symposium, "Why Taxes Matter: The Impact of Tax Policy on Strategic Business Decisions," will bring together leading professionals and policymakers to discuss the critical link between tax policy and business decision-making.  Topics will include the role of taxation in the deployment of financial capital, balancing base broadening, cross border taxation, international tax policy, and policy implications of tax reform.
