Corewell Health Announces $1.7 Billion Investment to Build Stronger Healthcare for Michigan

Major projects in Grand Rapids and Troy will expand access, modernize patient care  
 

GRAND RAPIDS and TROY, Mich., Aug. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Corewell Health™ is making a $1.7 billion investment in Michigan to expand healthcare access in two fast-growing regions: Grand Rapids and Troy. Major expansions at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital will improve the experience for patients, families, nurses and physicians.

As Michigan's healthcare leader, Corewell Health is responding to community needs, creating more private patient rooms, and modernizing emergency and surgical care.

Meeting Grand Rapids' Growing Healthcare Needs

Grand Rapids is growing and thriving, and the demand for healthcare is increasing. Over the past year, Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital's average patient census has consistently exceeded 90% occupancy.

The new, 780,000-square-foot facility on the Butterworth Hospital campus will be a $1.34 billion investment and will include a new emergency department, 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms and a hyperbaric chamber.

"We've outgrown our current facility. To be able to continue to deliver exceptional care as the only Level I trauma center in West Michigan, we need to expand access and modernize facilities."

The location includes properties at 230 Michigan St. and 330 Barclay Ave., where existing Corewell Health facilities currently stand. The 11-story design will require various city approvals. The proposed height allows for more efficient use of the site while reducing the building's footprint and creating additional separation from nearby neighbors.

 Demolition and construction are expected to begin in summer 2027.

Enhancing Patient Access and Experience in Troy

The city of Troy, and surrounding areas, are also rapidly growing. Corewell Health is investing approximately $440 million in a new 423,000-square-foot hospital tower at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, which is consistently over 90% capacity.

Rising eight stories, the hospital tower will include 180 private rooms, a new emergency department waiting room and improved connectivity across the campus. This will create a more seamless arrival experience for one of Corewell Health's busiest emergency departments with more than 106,000 visits per year.

Patient rooms will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology range from general care through intensive care.

Because the site is adjacent to the Troy hospital emergency department, the new facility will provide direct access from the parking deck to the emergency department, making it easier for patients and families to navigate the campus.

This investment is a continuation of Corewell Health's ongoing commitment to Troy and the surrounding areas. Additional projects planned include: an ambulatory center in Oxford, a cardiac ambulatory surgery center in Sterling Heights and additional clinical expansions.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027. 

Building Capacity for Michigan's Future 

Corewell Health is partnering with several Michigan-based companies for this work, including The Christman Company; Spesh Construction, which will serve as the partners for Butterworth; and Barton Malow and AIMS Construction, which will serve as the partners for Troy. These companies have brought significant expertise and have strengthened the projects. 

Both projects will proceed through regulatory and municipal reviews. The hospital towers are expected to be completed in 2030.
