COSI To Reopen Planetarium

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- COSI announced at its 50^th anniversary celebration this morning plans to reopen its planetarium in the fall.

COSI president and CEO David E. Chesebrough, Ed.D., made the announcement after COSI's signature version of "The 1812 Overture," revealing a banner with the information amid cheers from the crowd. 

"A planetarium was an original feature on opening day and I am thrilled to be able to share the news with Columbus on our 50^th anniversary that a planetarium will reclaim its spot as a key feature here at COSI," Chesebrough said.  "We've been looking for ways to reopen the planetarium since its closure in 2004 and are delighted to have a target date."

Senator John Glenn also shared his excitement with COSI about the reopening of the planetarium.

"As part of the training for the first group of astronauts, we spent a considerable amount of time in a planetarium learning how we could, if necessary, utilize celestial navigation in emergency situations for re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, even though our journey was to remain in lower earth orbit," said Senator John Glenn, former astronaut and longtime friend of COSI.  "I congratulate COSI on the re-opening of the Planetarium and hope its use may be a great inspiration to young and old alike."

The planetarium will reopen in the fall of 2014 at COSI and will have new flexible, digital capacity.  The planetarium is a 221-seat theater with a 60 foot dome.  A specific date for reopening has not yet been set but anyone is invited to make a gift to support the planetarium through our website at cosi.org/planetarium.
