WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Rebecca Lucore, head of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility at Covestro LLC, was a featured thought leader today at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's (USCCF) annual Corporate Citizenship Conference in Washington, D.C., where she shared the company's innovative new approach to employee engagement and volunteerism with a national audience.
Themed "Purpose & Progress," the USCCF's annual meeting showcased inspirational leaders, practical case studies, and innovative solutions from across sectors and around the country that are helping organizations grow while achieving a greater effect.
As a "Next Chapter of Employee Engagement" panelist, Lucore discussed how the company is pioneering skills-based volunteerism (SBV) in the United States through the establishment of the Covestro Institute for Engagement. She and her fellow panelists explored SBV and other evolving employee engagement strategies to illustrate how these approaches are maximizing social impact and transformational experiences for employees and organizations alike.
Lucore was joined on the panel by Scott Jackson, president and chief executive officer, Global Impact; Mark Horoszowski, co-founder, Moving Worlds; and David Porges, director, Corporate Social Responsibility, Grant Thornton LLP.
"Through Covestro's i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate) corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, we advocate and ascribe to this next generation of employee engagement that leverages human capital with greater purpose and a specific mission," said Lucore. "Our hope now is that other companies recognize this, see the value in skills-based volunteerism and get on board."
Through skills-based volunteerism, small teams of employees are trained and matched with a nonprofit organization for a short-term consulting project focused on a specific business challenge. The project can be related to finance, accounting, marketing, communications, systems, sustainability or any other issue a nonprofit may encounter.
In the fall of 2015, as Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience) became an independent company, it established the Covestro Institute for Engagement (CIE) at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. CIE is open to every nonprofit and company in the region. Today, in addition to the 100 Covestro employees who have engaged with almost 30 local nonprofits, nearly 500 employees from 77 other businesses in the region have attended CIE training.
"SBV has so many benefits," said Lucore. "It connects the workforce and the community. It helps nonprofits grow and build capacity. From the corporate perspective, it drives talent development and retention by deepening employees' roots in their communities. Most importantly, it helps build and maintain healthy, vibrant communities."
