IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Charles E. Schwenck to its Orange County office as a senior counsel in the firm's Energy Group. Schwenck has more than 40 years of experience handling transactions primarily in the energy, natural resources, and construction industries. His clients include developers, owners, operators, contractors, and investors, whom he assists on a broad range of commercial transactions concerning the development, financing, acquisition/disposition, and operation of energy and other infrastructure projects.
"Charles brings extensive experience advising clients in a variety of industries and will add new transactional capabilities to our already thriving Energy Group," said Angela B. Styles, chair of Crowell & Moring. "He will be a tremendous asset to our clients."
In addition to his 30 years of experience in private practice, Schwenck has held senior positions at major firms in the energy and construction industries, including as General Counsel of Fluor Corporation, Division Counsel of Bechtel Group's largest division, and as Chief Legal Officer of a significant energy and construction conglomerate. He has handled more than $100 billion in major project transactions, including the 1,960-mile Bolivia-to-Brazil natural gas pipeline and several large power plants in Brazil served by the pipeline. He joins the firm most recently from Gordon & Rees.
Larry F. Eisenstat, chair of Crowell & Moring's Energy Group, said: "Charles' addition not only deepens the firm's project development, finance, and general transactional capabilities, most particularly on the West Coast and Latin America, but also expands our service offerings in the rapidly changing and increasingly competitive energy sector, which will be of great value to our clients no matter how you slice it."
Schwenck's energy industry experience includes developing and negotiating innovative contractual structures for financing, constructing, and operating energy generation projects; products and services, including energy service performance contracts; synthetic power purchase agreements; and tolling agreements relating to electricity, natural gas, and petroleum and petrochemical products.
His infrastructure project experience includes roads, highways, bridges, rail (including high-speed intercity and light metropolitan rail), water and waste treatment facilities, airports, seaports, and cargo terminals, many of which projects involved private ownership, operation, and financing of public facilities. His mining and metals experience includes matters relating to the purchase of rights and extraction, processing, and sale of coal, base metals, precious metals, oil sands, gypsum and potash.
Schwenck's construction experience extends from representing project sponsors, investors, contractors, and lenders in the development of bidding documents and procedures to the negotiation of contractual and financial arrangements and to the implementation of project construction structures and delivery methods.
"I have worked alongside Crowell & Moring lawyers for many years and have great respect for the firm," Schwenck said. "The firm's transactional and regulatory capabilities align perfectly with the needs of my clients in the energy and infrastructure space. I am excited to help further grow the firm's energy industry capabilities both on the West Coast and elsewhere."
Schwenck received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and his B.S. from the University of California, Berkeley.
