Dana Holding Corporation to Launch New Drivetrain Solutions Specifically Designed for Chinese OEMs at Bauma China 2010

SHANGHAI, Nov. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the company's growing commitment to original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in China, Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) today announced the lineup of drivetrain systems that will be presented this week at Bauma China 2010, the largest exhibition of construction vehicles, machinery, and equipment in Asia.

Located in Hall E5, Stand 528 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, Dana will present a wide range of drivetrain solutions specifically engineered for Chinese OEMs, including:

• a complete 21-tonne ZL60 front-end loader system with the new Spicer® TZL powershift transmission;
• an integrated drivetrain for 11-tonne ZL30 front-end loaders;
• a driveline system for eight- to nine-tonne industrial lift trucks; and
• a demonstration of new freewheel and lockup capabilities for Spicer powershift transmissions above 90 kW (120 horsepower).

21-Tonne ZL60 Front-End Loader System

Dana will debut a 21-tonne drivetrain system for ZL60 front-end loaders that features the new Spicer TZL Series powershift transmission, Spicer Hercules™ 37R and 43R axles, and the Spicer Model 7C driveshaft.  

Scheduled for production in 2011 at the Dana assembly facility in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, the Spicer TZL16 transmission has been engineered to supply superior ZL50 front-end loaders with higher horsepower capability, reduced maintenance, and smoother, quieter operation.  An enhanced TZL18 version designed for ZL60 front-end loaders is expected shortly after the launch of the TZL16.  

The Spicer TZL is a new four-speed transmission platform that uses proven internal components from the extensive line of Spicer powershift transmissions already available for the off-highway market.  It includes high-energy-capacity forward and reverse clutches, adaptive clutch modulation, and helical gears to deliver a robust transmission with improved shift quality.  

Engineered with a rigid, multi-piece load-bearing structure including the differential carrier, housing arms, high-energy wet brakes, and planetary wheel ends, Spicer Hercules 37R and 43R axles accommodate multiple vehicle platform configurations.

Spicer 37R and 43R axles are available with Posi-Torq™ and Hydraloc™ differential designs that provide excellent torque bias performance in a wide range of ground traction conditions.  Using large multi-plate clutch discs actuated by gear-separating forces, the Posi-Torq design provides a 45-percent locking capacity, resulting in up to 72-percent torque transfer to the high-traction wheel.

As an operator-controlled differential, the Hydraloc design for 37R and 43R series axles allows for moment-to-moment lock-and-release control, delivering superior ground torque bias in severe traction conditions.  In its unlocked condition, the Hydraloc differential permits free vehicle steering to facilitate maximum maneuverability.  Once locked, a hydraulic piston applies force to a large multi-plate wet clutch, resulting in up to 100-percent torque transfer to the high-traction wheel.  

11-Tonne ZL30 Front-End Loader System

The Dana drivetrain system designed for 11-tonne ZL30 front-end loaders includes a Spicer 319 summing motor, Spicer Model 113 and Model 123 planetary rigid axles, and the Spicer Compact™ Series Model 2035 driveshaft.

The Spicer 319 summing motor transfer case provides maximum tractive performance and high efficiency by delivering seamless CVT (continuous variable transmission) performance from 0 to 40 km/h, including a continuous power transfer between forward and reverse that does not require clutch shifting.  Each motor is connected to its own gear ratio to accommodate the most cost-effective hydrostatic components.  Additionally, a disconnect clutch is fastened to the low-speed, high-gear-ratio motor, allowing the high-speed motor to function alone as a more efficient means of powering the vehicle at higher travel speeds.

Specifically designed to address the needs of the construction industry, Model 113 and Model 123 axles offer 6.00-to-1 ratio outboard planetary wheel ends with 335 mm wheel B.C. mounting, self-adjusting internal wet brakes, a trunnion mounting option, and several torque-biasing differential and park brake options.

These axles include a limited-slip differential lock that provides a 45-percent locking capacity, delivering excellent tractive force and nimble vehicle steering for front-end loader applications.  Spicer Model 113 and Model 123 axles can be configured with a variety of other hydraulic-locking differential options, including dog clutch and multi-disc clutch.  Inboard wet disc brakes offer proven fail-safe stopping performance and energy absorption, while a fail-safe park brake featuring internal negative SAHR is available as an option.  

Eight- to Nine-Tonne Industrial Lift Truck System

Responding to varying market preferences for control options, Dana offers a driveline system for eight- to nine-tonne industrial lift trucks that can be configured with either the Spicer T08 or the TE08 powershift transmission.  This system also includes the new Spicer Model 139 axle, the latest in a line of axles specifically designed for industrial lift trucks, as well as a Spicer Life® Series Model 150 driveshaft.  

Rated at 55 to 82 kW (75 to 110 horsepower), Spicer T08 and TE08 transmissions both offer three forward and two reverse speeds, while two-speed forward systems are also available.  By using a multiple-speed design, the T08 and TE08 transmissions deliver better overall transmission power transfer than single-speed transmissions equipped with less efficient twin-turbine torque converters. The T08 and TE08 feature a reduced transmission length and output drop, helical gears for noise reduction, and an integral engine pump drive to power system hydraulics.

The T08 transmission is configured with a conventional electric valve using hydraulic modulation, which provides simplified service in the field and excellent shift quality performance.  As a result, the T08 offers OEMs and end users a substantial improvement in ergonomics over other transmissions available for the Chinese domestic market today.

Meanwhile, the TE08 transmission features a fully electronically modulated clutch control using proportional solenoids.  Full electronic modulation and its associated control systems enable OEMs to use a complete range of best-in-class controls, such as safety inhibits, diagnostics, system monitoring, load- and speed-compensated automatic shifting, shift overlap control, electronic inching, and automatic throttle up.

Introduced at Bauma 2010 in Munich, Germany, the Spicer Model 139 axle is engineered to handle the highest load capacities while offering the same durability, reliability, and ease of maintenance provided by the well-received Spicer Model 137 and 138 axles already used for smaller lift trucks.

Suitable for lift trucks equipped with pneumatic tires, the Spicer Model 139 axle includes integral frame and mast mounting provisions for fixed-mast lift truck applications, and its spiral bevel center section and a 6-to-1 planetary ratio generate 13-to-1 through 17-to-1 overall axle ratios.  

The Spicer Model 139 axle has a planetary design that allows for a small ring gear, enabling engineers to locate the mast as close to the axle's center line as possible for optimum geometry in load carrying and lifting.  

Freewheel, Lockup for Large Spicer Powershift Transmissions

At Bauma China, Dana will debut freewheel and lockup with integral torsional vibration damper on Spicer powershift transmissions above 90 kW (120 horsepower).

Freewheel and lockup can help OEMs improve overall drivetrain performance and optimize the efficiency of their product lines by 7-10 percent on average, depending on the duty cycle.  These upgrades will take advantage of new, more robust freewheel designs that are mandatory for off-highway equipment operating in increasingly demanding environments.

Dana will offer these new features in two configurations: freewheel only, or lockup incorporating freewheel and torsional vibration damper.
