DAS Market Loses Altitude in 2018, New Tailwind Coming in 2020

CAMPBELL, Calif., Oct. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, Mobile Experts released a detailed view of the current and upcoming DAS market, with technical information on architectural changes, a close look at business metrics related to operator investments and enterprise investment in DAS projects, and with new product focus as the Public Safety market ramps up.

This new DAS report explains how the industry is shifting away from carrier-funded (Carrier DAS) to a venue or enterprise funded (Enterprise DAS) model. Some Carrier DAS opportunities remain: stadiums, airports, and other large public venues, but they are fewer in number. There will be an uptick in Enterprise DAS revenue, but it will not be enough to offset the market slow-down; thus, the DAS market is expected to decline about 10% in 2018.

Along with the shift to Enterprise DAS: the market is shifting toward Virtual RAN solutions, with baseband processing solutions that are making neutral-hosted business models more affordable and deployable.

"A variety of factors in the market will bring about a small decline in 2018, but things will pick back up in 2020 as the mid-band spectrum (3-6GHz) is deployed in major indoor venues for 5G," commented Principal Analyst Kyung Mun. "Challenges to the market will be offset by the shift to 5G, which will provide a much-needed boost as carriers and high-end venue owners will deploy that spectrum for higher performance and better user experience."

According to Mobile Experts, the market's competitive climate is forcing many DAS players to expand their product porfolios or shift market focus to adapt to the changing environment. Some DAS vendors are expanding their products to include baseband signal sources, including small cells and virtualized baseband processing (BBU). At the same time, major RAN vendors are entering the market with Distributed Radio Solutions (DRS). Smaller players are opting to focus on adjacent repeater/booster and growing public safety markets, aided by the increasing public safety mandates that are taking hold.
