Data Conversion Laboratory, 35 Years Young, Continues to Break New Ground With Leading-Edge Solutions to Big Data Problems

FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y., March 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In October of 2016, Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL) reached its 35^th year in business – a milestone that is unique in the content and data conversion industry – all the while continuing to break ground in technical solutions and project wins.

DCL, a leader in organizing, converting and enhancing content into digital formats, had one of its most successful years to date with projects won in a wide range of industries, including ones from American Prison Data Systems (APDS) and Stanford University Press. The company also co-hosted two industry surveys with the Center for Information Development Management (CIDM) and Bowker. Here are some of the other highlights from DCL's 2016:

• Woman Owned Small Business: DCL officially became certified as a Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) by the National Women Business Owners Corporation (NWBOC), the first national certifier of Women Business Enterprises.
• Structuring Unstructured Text: DCL shaped a multi-step Smart Mark-up process leveraging the combination of business rules, authority files, and configurable data patterns to decompose unstructured business and regulatory documents and to create xml documents automatically reducing dramatically the cost of creating large repositories.
• GATE Architecture: DCL embraced GATE (General Architecture for Text Engineering) as a platform for highly accurate content conversion. GATE is an open source development environment for computational language processing and text mining that incorporates machine learning and a variety of other text analytics techniques. 
• Machine Learning/Natural Language Processing (ML/NLP): DCL has been creating processes to automatically extract metadata from text streams. An example is a process to accurately locate, extract and validate grant and funding support information in published and unpublished content.
• Getting Discovered: Getting content out there to discovery vendors is critical to having content found, but for many societies, associations and professional publishers, including SDOs (Standards Development Organizations) and the scientific, technical and medical community in general, it's not that easy to maintain the specialized staff. DCL has created a service to help those organizations by collecting, aggregating and maintaining their metadata in a normalized fashion, and then creating discovery vendor specific feeds to deliver and load content and metadata to all the relevant services on an ongoing basis.
• Web Content Harvesting and Tracking: More and more information is becoming publicly available on the internet, with the expectation that you'll see it. Keeping track of this flood of information, and when it changes, is becoming an overwhelming burden for organizations, especially in regulated industries. To help clients manage compliance with large volumes of legal and regulatory content, DCL developed a configurable content harvesting toolkit that supports automated crawling, downloading and reconciling content from a wide-variety of websites.
• Library Digitization: For the Bureau of Economic Analysis, DCL has digitized over two million pages of various types of internal documents that serve as valuable research materials for the agency's staff, making them more searchable and accessible, while saving lots of floorspace.
• American Society of Civil Engineers: DCL is proud to take on production of ASCE's Conference Proceedings. DCL's creative approach mitigated a number of cost items that would otherwise be incurred.
• Cargill: DCL partnered with Cargill, a provider of food, agricultural, financial, and industrial products, and the 2^nd largest privately held company in the world, to apply metadata to new images then load them into their Digital Asset Management (DAM) system.
