Data Increasing Exponentially But Information Governance Programs Show Slow Progress
The McKinsey Global Institute projects 40% year on year growth in data, and yet only 33% of U.S. organizations have an active information governance program
LONDON, August 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
In preparation for the Information Governance & eDiscovery Strategy Exchange, taking place 19-21 September in Washington, research by the Legal Exchange Network found information governance to be the number one challenge for strategic in-house Counsel. However, a further survey conducted in partnership with the eDJ Group to uncover the state of information governance (IG) in enterprises today showed slow progress with IG programs.
The report states that whilst a third of respondents have an active IG program within their organization, only a third have IG programs in the planning stages, and the remainder do not have a program at all, or are unsure if they have one.
Abi Manders, Global Head of Products, Legal Exchange Network, says: "The report highlights important information about why companies are struggling to get their information governance initiatives off the ground; namely the lack of executive ownership".
Al Lakhani, Managing Director, Global Forensic and Dispute Services for Alvarez & Marsal is delivering the opening Keynote Address at September's Exchange and will be highlighting some of the ways organizations can tackle information governance more effectively. Further comments on the importance of cross-functional communication and cooperation will come from Thomas Hommel, Managing Director, Co-General Counsel for Lehman Brother Holdings, Raquel Tamez, Deputy General Counsel for Litigation and eDiscovery at CSC and Jason R. Baron, Director of Litigation for the National Archives and Records Administration.
The eDJ Group state in the report: "Good IG programs build a corporate culture where responsibility for information is a core tenet. Employees understand policies and are incentivized to abide by them. That culture can only develop under a high-level executive who truly believes in IG."
