SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2011, Davis Vision expanded its Focus on America® and Sight from America® programs to impact thousands of lives worldwide. Since the programs' inception in 2008, Davis Vision and Visionworks eye care professionals have provided $2.6 million in services, including vision screenings, eye exams and glasses, to more than 18,000 uninsured children.
In addition to 60 screening events in 2011, Davis Vision combined a literacy initiative with its vision screenings. The "Bring a Book. Get a Book. See a Book." program provided thousands of children with eye exams, free books and library cards to empower them to read.
"Last year we also launched a new partnership with Prevent Blindness Ohio to provide free eyeglasses to Akron-area residents without the resources to obtain eyewear," said Davis Vision President Steve Holden. "It is one of many community partnerships we have in place around the country, and it is similar to programs in Baltimore, Memphis and Boston that have provided nearly $1.3 million worth of services to those in need in the community."
In partnership with sister company Visionworks, formerly Eye Care Centers of America, eyeglass frames were donated to those in need through charitable partnerships with nonprofits and other organizations across the United States.
Additional donations of $38.5 million in eyeglasses, frames and services were provided to Sight from America partners, including Southern Eye Institute, Global Health Ministries and various chapters of VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) for assistance to communities abroad.
National industry trade publication Vision Monday recognized the Focus on America program with its D.A.R.E. (Dispensing and Retail Excellence) Sphere of Influence Award for "Most Daring Community Outreach, Philanthropic or Patient Education Program." The award honored the companies' commitment to enhancing the health and quality of life of underserved children and adults.
Davis Vision's Focus on America and Sight from America outreach programs offer vision services and eyewear to individuals in need across the United States and throughout the world. To date, Davis Vision has donated more than $42 million in products and services through its outreach initiatives.
