Deloitte Strengthens Position as Market-Leading Security & Privacy Practice, Appoints Former FBI New York Office Cyber Division Special Agent in Charge Mary E. Galligan as a Director

NEW YORK, Sept. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Former senior-ranking Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent in Charge Mary E. Galligan, who supervised some of the FBI's largest and most high profile investigations -- including the September 11th terrorist attacks -- has joined Deloitte & Touche LLP's market-leading security and privacy practice as a director. Galligan recently retired from the FBI after more than 25 years' service.

The addition of Galligan brings a national security and law enforcement perspective to the incident response portion of the cyber security equation. Earlier this year, Deloitte further strengthened its security & privacy practice by acquiring the assets of Vigilant, Inc.  Renamed Vigilant by Deloitte, this segment of the practice specializes in security monitoring and cyber threat intelligence, providing consulting, managed services, and information services that help organizations detect and respond to emerging cyber threats.

Galligan will advise senior executives at Fortune 500 firms on crisis management challenges, in particular cyber risks.  She will help clients develop and execute security programs to prevent and minimize the business impact of cyber threats.  This includes board member education, cyber war-gaming, and other strategy efforts as the public and private sector collaboration around cyber security in the U.S. takes shape.

Galligan most recently served as Special Agent in Charge of the New York Office's Special Operations and cyber division, leading more than 400 employees in the largest technical and physical surveillance operation in the Bureau's field offices. She also was responsible for overseeing the SWAT team and special events in the New York Area.

She entered the FBI as a special agent in 1988 and served in the New York office, gaining broad criminal, terrorism and intelligence-gathering experience. Galligan was appointed supervisor of the FBI's investigation into the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, dubbed PENTTBOM, overseeing all aspects of the investigation with a team of 75 investigators.  In July 2013, Galligan became the FBI/New York Office's first female Special Agent in Charge.

Galligan holds a bachelor's degree from Fordham University, a master's degree in psychology from the New School for Social Research, and an honorary doctorate of law from Marian University. She attended the Law Enforcement Executive Development Program at Princeton University and the Graduate School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.  She is an FBI-certified Crisis Negotiator and Crisis Manager.
