WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Democratic Governors Association issued the following statement in response to Terry Branstad's announcement today that he will re-run for Iowa governor.
"Iowa voters have seen this movie before," said Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association. "It's a horror film that left them grabbing their wallets and running for the nearest exit."
"The last thing Iowa needs is a sequel to the MasterCard governor, who left office amid public fury over his irresponsible overspending and budget habits," Daschle said. "We expect to see a vigorous Republican primary that will hold Terry Branstad accountable for the enormous tax increases and reckless spending that are the hallmarks of his time in office."
"More importantly, Iowans will have a stark choice in this election. Terry Branstad is offering them a throwback to the failed ideas that caused this recession in the first place and no vision for the future. Iowans deserve a governor who will continue to move the state forward, not take it backward," Daschle said. "Gov. Culver has been tireless in fighting for the middle class, especially in creating jobs through his I-JOBS programs. We're confident that he'll continue to be governor after the election and he has our strong support."
