Diesel Direct Powers Steamship Authority's Renewable Fuel Trial in New England Waters

BOSTON, June 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Diesel Direct, the nation's largest asset-based mobile fueling solutions provider, is proud to support the Steamship Authority in launching its landmark renewable diesel pilot program this summer aboard the M/V Island Home, which operates on the Woods Hole–Martha's Vineyard route. This initiative marks the first East Coast deployment of R99 renewable diesel in marine operations by the Authority, setting a new precedent for sustainable ferry transportation in New England.

During the trial period from June 1 to September 1, 2025, Diesel Direct will provide R99 renewable diesel to power the ferry. Based on the feedstock used, the program is expected to achieve a minimum 50% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions—and potentially up to 78%—when compared to conventional ultra-low-sulfur diesel.

R99 is a drop-in fuel made from renewable biomass and is chemically identical to petroleum-based diesel, requiring no engine modifications. While widely used on the West Coast, this trial represents a significant step toward expanding renewable diesel availability on the Eastern Seaboard.

Steamship Authority General Manager Robert B. Davis expressed optimism about the pilot's potential: "This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will be significant to our operations and our port communities. We're excited to be at the forefront of testing R99's use in New England."

The Steamship Authority's Board and Port Council unanimously approved funding for the program at their May 15 joint meeting. If successful, the Authority plans to explore the transition of all ten of its ferries to renewable diesel.
