Direct Federal Credit Union Launches Direct Impact Checking: Turning Everyday Spending into Community Impact
New Checking Account To Support Four Massachusetts Non-Profits
NEEDHAM, Mass., Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Direct Federal Credit Union is redefining everyday banking with the launch of Direct Impact Checking, a purpose-driven checking account that allows members to support causes they care about simply by using their debit card, at no cost to the member.
For more than 73 years, Direct Federal has served people who live, work, worship, or attend school in Norfolk or Middlesex County, Massachusetts. With Direct Impact Checking, members can select one of four participating Massachusetts nonprofits to support. As members use their Direct Impact debit card, Direct Federal makes a donation tied to their everyday spending.
"People make choices every day about where they shop, what they support and how they spend their money. We believe banking should be part of that conversation," said Kristen Johnson, Chief Experience Officer, Direct Federal Credit Union. "Direct Impact Checking gives our members a simple way to turn everyday spending into meaningful support for organizations doing important work across Massachusetts, at no cost to themselves."
Four nonprofit partners include:
- PFLAG Greater Boston supports the LGBTQ+ community, families and allies through education, peer support and advocacy.
- SAFE Coalition provides education, support and resource navigation for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder and mental health challenges, with a focus on prevention and recovery.
- The Ellie Fund provides essential non-medical support to breast cancer patients and their families, helping ease the everyday challenges of treatment.
- Raising A Reader Massachusetts helps parents and young children develop shared reading habits that build language skills and a foundation for reading success.
Direct Federal has maintained long-standing relationships with the four organizations through its broader commitment to community partnerships and financial well-being.
"We are proud to partner with four organizations that are making a difference in the lives of Massachusetts residents," Johnson added. "Together, we're showing that banking can be about more than where you keep your money. It can be banking with a purpose."
Direct Impact Checking reflects growing interest in values-driven spending, particularly among younger consumers. Recent data from GivingTuesday Data Commons and GoFundMe indicates that up to 70% of Gen Z adults have participated in some form of philanthropy.
Direct Federal will track and share the program's community impact as participation grows, including funds generated, account growth, cause selection and stories from participating organizations.
"Community impact doesn't always have to start with a major donation," said Danya Raphael, Vice President, Brand Experience, Direct Federal Credit Union. "We are giving our members the chance to make a difference with everyday purchases."
