Discovery en Espanol Brings One of The Most Dramatic Moments in Catholic Church History to Life
The Network Premieres "En Nombre de la Fe", an Original Production that Highlights Key Events during the Holy Inquisition in Latin America
MIAMI, March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sunday, April 1 at 9 PM E/P, Discovery en Espanol premieres its original production, En Nombre de la Fe (In the Name of Faith), a gripping historical documentary that analyzes and brings to life the actions of the Holy Inquisition in Latin America. At the same time when Spanish conquistadors were reaching the New World, the Inquisition was spreading its shadow of terror across Europe. But is the extent of its influence on Latin America really known or understood?
To illustrate one of the Catholic Church's darkest chapters and be able to interpret this in the context of the times and historical circumstances, En Nombre de la Fe uses powerful dramatizations, images obtained from historical archives, interviews with experts, and visits to the sites of the controversial institution's three courts in the New Continent: Mexico City, Lima, and Cartagena.
The documentary also depicts the treatment of those accused of being pagans, such as Carlos de Texcoco and Mateo Salado whose convictions were used to teach the people a lesson and provoked discontent among the local communities; Luis de Carvajal and Manuel Bautista, two wealthy Jewish converts in Mexico and Peru who were persecuted and executed for political reasons; and the Cuban slave, Paula de Eguiluz, who promoted African rituals in Cartagena. The Inquisition's violent reaction to these and other situations were, for centuries, an embarrassment to the Catholic Church, for which the Vatican offered a public apology by Pope John Paul II.
En Nombre de la Fe is an original production by Discovery en Espanol under the direction of Michela Giorelli, Rafael Rodriguez and Irune Ariztoy. It was created by Zodiak Latino production house under the executive production of Veronica Montali and Harris Whitbeck.
Also in April and during Holy Week, Discovery en Espanol will broadcast two new series that delve into the scientific and historical aspects of religious events. These two specials are:
La Ciencia del Pecado - (The Science of Sin) Monday through Friday, April 2-6 at 10 PM E/P - This series takes viewers on a scientific journey to the darkest corners of the brain to explain why human beings commit sins. The series closely follows two sinners through their destructive actions, while scientists try to reveal, through never-before-used tests, what lurks behind the most sinful actions of mankind.
Quien fue Jesus? - (Who was Jesus?) Sunday, April 8, at 9 PM E/P - This two-hour special tells the story of Jesus, what it meant to be born into tyranny, to be executed for preaching forgiveness and harmony among his own people, and the risk of death that his disciples faced for spreading his message of salvation.
