Display Week 2016 Wows As Attendees Turn Eyes, Ears To Latest In Cool Display Trends

CAMPBELL, Calif., June 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hosted by the Society for Information Display (SID), Display Week 2016 showcased the latest in innovative technology developments. As the premier conference and tradeshow for system integrators, designers, consumers, scientists, engineers and manufacturers in the field of electronic display technology, the 53^rd annual event, held in San Francisco late last month, was both lively and memorable.

Sessions on augmented and virtual reality were among the most popular with the record 7,000-plus attendees, who were eager to learn about the latest advancements in this fast-growing display segment. Experts also expanded on automotive and wearable technology, OLED TVs, advanced touch screens, haptic feedback devices, electronic paper, quantum dots and even more exciting developments yet to hit the market. New this year was the CMO Forum, moderated by SID Head of Marketing Sri Peruvemba. The session brought together top display industry executives to explore market trends and new opportunities for success, and to convey life lessons in marketing and sales.

Leading electronics companies from across the globe were well represented at Display Week, with notables, including keynote speakers: Steven Bathiche, distinguished scientist at Microsoft Corp.; Hiroyuki Ohshima, CTO of Japan Display, Inc.; and Sung-Chul Kim, executive VP and Chief of the Research Center of Samsung Display co., Ltd. In addition, with the role of displays in vehicles continuing to grow, virtually every imaginable carmaker's moniker could be found on name tags around the show.

On the exhibit floor, attendees were able to experience up-close encounters with the newest developments. Here are just a few of the unique and vibrant displays that grabbed attention:

• AGC Asahi Glass – interactive virtual concierge robot featuring Glascene™, a dual-purpose glass that can serve as normal transparent glass and as a projection screen
• Corning Iris™ Glass – featured in two ultra-slim, edge-lit LCD modules
• E Ink Corp. – 32-inch fully flexible display
• Fujitsu Components America – FID-154 Custom series of automotive projected capacitive (PCAP) touch panels
• Samsung – VR-oriented 4K 5.5-inch display and its 5.7-inch rollable OLED display
• Sharp– from 1.33-inch color memory LCD for wearables to 90-inch eSignage modules
• Nanosys – new Hyperion Quantum Dots material, which represents a significant development in meeting the BT.2020 UltraHD color standard

Another of the key stops on the show floor was the I-Zone, sponsored by E Ink. In its fifth year at Display Week, I-Zone features cutting-edge demos and prototypes that lead to the products of tomorrow. The 2016 "Best Prototype" winner was nVerpix for its Vertical Organic Light Emitting Transistor Display.

Presented during the Display Industry Awards luncheon on May 25, the Best in Show Awards honored the most significant advances in display technology and systems, products, prototypes and manufacturing processes shown at Display Week. This year's winners, selected from close to 200 exhibitors, included:

• LG Display for its high-dynamic-range 77-inch UHD OLED TV

Medium Exhibit Category

• E Ink for its breakthrough color e-paper display
• Asahi Glass Co. for its unique booth presentation showcasing integrated display technologies

Small Exhibit Category:

• DigiLens for its unique presentation of highly efficient, holographic head-up display technology
• MY Polymers for its low-refractive-index liquid optically clear adhesive with high-bonding strength
