DNV GL Healthcare Moving Toward Psychiatric Hospital Deeming Authority

MILFORD, Ohio, Aug. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- DNV GL Healthcare has applied to become the second accreditation organization in the United States to accredit psychiatric hospitals to participate in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) program.

Psychiatric hospitals must not only meet the same requirements as acute care hospitals to satisfy the Conditions of Participation mandated by (CMS), but must also meet special requirements pertaining to the delivery of psychiatric services, medical record requirements for psychiatric hospitals, and special staff requirements for psychiatric hospitals.

"We expect to have deeming authority for psychiatric hospitals no later than the first quarter of 2019," said Patrick Horine, President of DNV GL Healthcare. "Having deeming authority will give psychiatric hospitals not only a choice of accrediting bodies, but an opportunity to establish a collaborative relationship with DNV GL that will lead to a higher quality of care and improved outcomes."

In order to receive deeming authority from CMS, DNV GL Healthcare must first conduct five demonstration surveys free of charge, and a sixth observation survey with CMS officials observing. Two surveys have been conducted to date, with a third scheduled. DNV GL Healthcare is seeking two more psychiatric hospitals to perform on-site demonstration surveys.

Participation in the demonstration survey process offers the psychiatric hospital the opportunity to:

• Receive an onsite audit of their psychiatric hospital without cost to the organization
• Validate current practice
• Identify opportunities for improvement
• Gain exposure to the NIAHO® integrated accreditation process
