The initiative places quality, origin and traceability at the center of the conversation about Cava. Through blind tasting and practical service, competitors will explore how extended aging, vineyard character and production choices shape these wines, and how to communicate their distinction to guests.
Cava de Guarda Superior encompasses Reserva, Gran Reserva and Paraje Calificado—three premium classifications made with 100% organically grown grapes and subject to rigorous quality standards and extended aging. At the pinnacle of this quality pyramid is Cava de Guarda Superior Paraje Calificado, the denomination's highest distinction, reserved for wines from exceptional sites whose soil and microclimate contribute to their individual character.
These Paraje Calificado wines must meet rigorous requirements, including vineyards more than ten years old, hand harvesting, limited yields, estate vinification and a minimum of 36 months of aging. Together, these standards reflect D.O. CAVA's commitment to authenticity, traceability and the expression of origin.
Under the proposed competition format, 10 candidates will take part in a 30-minute blind tasting examination. The opening round will serve as an elimination stage, with the four highest-performing candidates advancing to the service final. The focus remains on each sommelier's ability to assess the wines and communicate an informed understanding of their quality and style.
A D.O. CAVA masterclass will follow the tasting round, adding an educational component to the day's program. The four finalists will be announced during the masterclass before returning for a live service competition in front of an audience.
Each finalist will complete a 15-minute service round designed to bring Cava knowledge into a practical hospitality setting. The challenge will assess how effectively competitors translate technical understanding into clear recommendations, thoughtful food pairings and an engaging guest experience.
By connecting tasting with service, the competition will demonstrate the relevance of Cava de Guarda Superior to premium wine programs and elevated dining experiences. Sommeliers will be challenged to explain the differences between styles and classifications and communicate how these wines can complement a range of dishes and occasions.
The competition will conclude with the announcement of the results following the service final. By bringing education and competition together, D.O. CAVA aims to deepen the U.S. sommelier community's understanding of Cava de Guarda Superior and strengthen recognition of its quality, gastronomic versatility and sense of place.
