Doheny Eye Institute Commemorates 70th Anniversary

LOS ANGELES, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Doheny Eye Institute, a world leader in ophthalmological research, is celebrating its 70^th Anniversary in 2017. The Institute traces its origins to prominent Los Angeles philanthropist, Mrs. Carrie Estelle Doheny. On the day of her sixty-ninth birthday, Mrs. Doheny, while kneeling to pray in her private chapel, suffered a hemorrhage leaving her blind. Mrs. Doheny founded and funded Doheny Eye Institute, "to further the conservation, improvement, and restoration of human eyesight."

To commemorate the 70^th Anniversary, the Institute has published A Clear Vision: The History of Doheny Eye Institute 1947-2017. The book was written by Laurie Levin, an anthropologist and acclaimed chronicler of institutional histories. This comprehensive history, featuring full-color photographs, details the Institute's beginnings and its growth to prominence.

"Publishing a detailed history of Doheny was a passion for our late-president, Dr. Stephen J. Ryan," explains Christopher Clinton Conway, Doheny's Chief of Development and Public Affairs. "The project began under Dr. Ryan and with the leadership of Executive Director Marissa Goldberg, we were able to create an accessible presentation of the Institute's impressive history," said Mr. Conway.

To celebrate Doheny's 70^th Anniversary and the publication of A Clear Vision, the Pasadena Central Library, located at 285 East Walnut Street, will hold an author talk and book signing on June 8, 2017, as part of Health Month. The event is free and open to the public. The event begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m., and features a presentation and questions from the audience, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
