Dowitcher Press Presents 'The Poems of Alan Stephens: A Reading'

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., April 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of national poetry month, Dowitcher Press presents 'The Poems of Alan Stephens: A Reading'. The event highlights the work of a respected local poet who frequently wrote about the Santa Barbara area with collection titles such asGoodbye Matilija and Running at Hendry's.

Local poets and authors, including John Ridland, Barry Spacks, Caroline Allen, and Robyn Bell, will read selections from three newly published books: Selected Poems, Collected Poems (1958-1998), and Running at Hendry's. Stephens' son and editor of the collections, A.A. Stephens, will provide opening remarks.

The reading will begin at 4:30 pm, April 21, 2013, at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, 1535 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA. A reception will follow, and books will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.

About the Author
Alan Stephens was born December 19, 1925, in Greeley, Colorado. He grew up on the family farm there, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Denver, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri.

Stephens joined the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1960 and remained there until his retirement in 1989. He was a founding faculty member of the College of Creative Studies at UCSB.

He published eleven books of poetry in his lifetime, includingWhite River Poems(Swallow Press), The White Boat (Buckner Press) and Away from the Road (Living Batch Press).

He was married for 60 years to Frances Stephens. They raised three sons. He died July 21, 2009, at home in Santa Barbara.
