Dr. Richard G. Linowes Honored for Excellence in Business Education

WASHINGTON, Dec. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Richard G. Linowes is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. As a management educator with more than four decades of industry experience at his disposal, Dr. Linowes aims to build enlightened leaders who are prepared to take action in the world. He has been recognized as a Kogod Outstanding Professor of undergraduate programs with the Kogod School of Business at American University since 1986. In this position, Dr. Linowes endeavors to share his knowledge of international business, quality management and cross-cultural relations with the next generation of business professionals. Celebrating over a decade as an educator with the Foreign Service Institute, the U.S. government's premier foreign affairs training provider, Dr. Linowes recently became the founding professor of Clarewood University in Reston, Virginia, in 2016.

A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Linowes completed undergraduate education at Princeton University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in cybernetics in 1973. He went on to complete a Master of Science in computer and communication services at the University of Michigan in 1975 and then launched his international career with Matsushita Electric Industrial Company, Ltd., in Osaka, Japan.  Dr. Linowes returned to the United States as a senior systems analyst with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Washington, DC. He then entered Harvard Business School as research assistant and doctoral student earning a Doctor of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1984.  Following his postgraduate education, Dr. Linowes joined Goldman Sachs in New York City as internal management consultant between 1983 and 1986 where he helped plan their organization, technology use and international expansion. His final year in New York City included serving as an adjunct information systems professor with New York University.

Dr. Linowes chose to become an educator as a way to help insure people with high integrity enter the business world. He has developed new teaching methods that convey key lessons of business experience in the classroom, winning him a Fulbright Award for Pedagogical Innovation in 1989.  His methods create transformational experiences that help students find their personal mission and take steps towards realizing it.  He has been an examiner with the education pilot team that extended the Baldrige National Quality Award to the field of Education.  Over the years, he has served as a visiting professor with University of Waikato in New Zealand, University of Warsaw in Poland, Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and Tel Aviv University in Israel. He helped launch the American University-Ritsumeikan Dual Degree Program that trains graduates to work in both U.S. and Japan. 

One of the greatest highlights of his career was the inaugural meeting of the Kogod Alumni Network of Greater New York, which was attended by 30 of his former students. He values extensive traveling to visit with American and Japanese companies around the world and includes meetings with former students along the way.  Looking to the future, Dr. Linowes expects to increase his involvement with Clarewood University where he will become president in May 2019. He continues to serve as a professor and consultant in his field.

Outside of his teaching appointments, Dr. Linowes maintains an active career in publishing. Since the 1990s, he has been credited as an editor of five volumes of "Portraits of Small Business from the Developing World, Management Casebooks" produced with USAID. He has published articles that clarify differences between Americans and Japanese and propose ways for mutual adjustment. His latest work clarifies the demands for management attention in international business and identifies best practices in managing across cultures.  He has also served as a reviewer of "Emerging Trends in Japanese Business" and "Japanese Direct Investment in the United States," among other industry publications. His media appearances have included the PBS program, "Writing Across the Curriculum," and "Getting Down to Business" on Voice of America. Today, Dr. Linowes is advisor to Washington Innovation Network and maintains involvement with the International Personnel Management Association, the Association of Japanese Business Studies, the Fulbright Association, the Princeton Club and the Harvard Club. He has been a member of the Greater Washington Board of Trade.

Featured in Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Dr. Linowes was most recently selected to receive the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
