Dr. Ronald McMahan, Leading Energy Expert, Named Special Advisor to General Atlantic

GREENWICH, Conn., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- General Atlantic LLC (GA), a leading global growth equity firm, today announced that Dr. Ronald McMahan, founder of Global Energy Decisions and senior vice president at IHS Inc., has become a Special Advisor to the firm. In this role, Dr. McMahan will support GA's active value-added approach to partnering with growth companies by providing strategic counsel to GA and its portfolio companies with a focus on GA's Energy & Resources Sector.

Founded in 1980, GA is active in the Energy & Resources sector, identifying and investing in businesses that facilitate the transformation of global supply and demand infrastructure of critical resources. GA's recent investments in the sector include Asian Genco, an energy and resources company providing power in India, and Gavilon, a leading provider of merchandising and distribution for agriculture and energy resources.

With a target investment size of $50 million to $500 million, GA manages approximately $15 billion and invests between $1 billion and $2 billion per year in growth opportunities globally. GA's Special Advisor network consists of several experienced industry executives who work closely with GA's investment professionals in identifying new opportunities as well as providing strategic advice and guidance to GA and its portfolio companies.

Dr. McMahan is an experienced energy economist whose practical understanding of industry issues has made him one of the nation's leading experts in the areas of energy markets, strategy and policy.  He currently serves as senior vice president for strategic initiatives for IHS Inc., a leading global source of critical information and insight, and as a member of the company's Advisory Board.  In 2002, Dr. McMahan founded Global Energy Decisions, LLC to provide a broad range of strategic business solutions to the energy industry, from upstream through operations, trading, transmission, and distribution. In 2007, Global Energy Decisions was acquired by Ventyx, a leading business solutions provider to global energy, utility, communications, and other asset-intensive organizations.

Dr. McMahan has held several part-time and honorary academic appointments including Visiting Lecturer in Telecommunications and Society at the University of California at San Diego.  He was a member of the faculty of the Colorado School of Mines Executive Training Institute and served on the Board of Directors of the College of Business at Montana State University.
