Dr. Simon S. Rabinowitz, Ph.D., M.D., FAAP, is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional
NEW YORK, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Simon S. Rabinowitz, Ph.D., M.D, FAAP, is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of Medicine. Dr. Rabinowitz is a Visiting Professor and Vice Chairman of Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
As one of the largest colleges of medicine in New York, the SUNY Downstate Medical Center is the only academic medical center combining health education, research, and patient care services to the residents of Brooklyn. As a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, and American College of Gastroenterology, Dr. Rabinowitz is an esteemed physician with over three decades of experience. He is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. He has published in a variety of areas of including eosinophilic esophagitis, Helicobacter pylori, viral and congenital hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux, and necrotizing enterocolitis.
In addition to being well known for his care of inner city and developmentally challenged children, he has also received international accolades for his innovative research in children with HIV infection. Original work recently published by Dr. Rabinowitz was chosen to appear in a recent issue of "World Biomedical Frontiers", because of its "innovation and potential for significant impact." Dr. Rabinowitz found that the most common bacterial infection in humans, Helicobacter pylori, which is the cause of most duodenal ulcers and many cases of gastric cancer, appears to also protect children from obesity. His work validates previous observations made in Chinese and Italian children. He hypothesizes that the bacteria causes disturbances in a hormone made by the stomach which influences the satiety center in the brain.
Dr. Rabinowitz has presented more than 35 posters at national and international conferences and authored nearly 40 published articles and book chapters. He has also lectured to a variety of medical audiences. He created the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Downstate, and started the fellowship training program there which was among the first in the country to be certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. He remains actively involved in teaching fellows, residents and students on the wards and as a lecturer. Previously, Dr. Rabinowitz served as the Chairman of the Nutrition Committee at Kings County Hospital where he introduced the dissemination of food and drug interaction handouts in English, Spanish, and Creole, to all patients picking up prescriptions at the hospital pharmacy.
Throughout the course of his career, he has been a peer reviewer for Pediatrics, the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, and other publications. Previously he served as the Chairman of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Residency program director at St. Vincent Hospital, Staten Island and Richmond University Medical Center. There he introduced a number of advances in resident education that were utilized throughout the entire hospital and served as the Chairman of the hospital's Graduate Medical Education Committee. During his tenure, his department received Health Grades' Pediatric Patient Safety Excellence Award, given to less than 5% of the hospitals in the nation.
Dr. Rabinowitz has been included in all fifteen published editions of Castle and Connolly's Metropolitan New York City's Top Doctors, multiple times in New York magazine's Top Doctors, in a number of Who's Who publications including Who's Who in America 2015, Leaders of Health Care 2014-5, Worldwide Who's Who of Executives, Professionals and Entrepreneurs, and America's Top Physicians.
Recognized by Doctors of Excellence, he has contributed a number of articles to the on-line medical encyclopedia emedicine/medscape including the very popular "failure to thrive" and "abdominal examination". Aside from the demands of work, Dr. Rabinowitz enjoys gardening, photography, bicycling, yoga, and karate. He currently holds a Black Belt in Kyokushin Karate.
Dr. Rabinowitz obtained his Medical degree from the University Of Miami School Of Medicine. He went on to complete his Pediatric residency and his fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Prior to becoming a physician he earned his Ph.D. in Physiological Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin- Madison as well as his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Vassar College. Coming from a modest Brooklyn background, Dr. Rabinowitz worked his way through college as a high school janitor, Coney Island parks department beach cleaner, window and dish washer, busboy, peddler, and pantyhose salesman.
