Internships and contract roles now account for 27% of early-career hiring, roughly double their 2020 share, and they're lasting longer — average internship tenure has climbed from 3.6 to 9.7 months and contractor tenure from 7.4 to 12.9 months. The signal is a shift toward temporary and experiential entry points rather than immediate permanent hires.

AI Skills Are No Longer a Technology Story
AI requirements have moved well beyond engineering. While IT (68%) and Engineering R&D (61%) remain the most AI-intensive functions, core business roles are catching up fast — AI-skill penetration has reached 31% in Support, 25% in Sales, 21% in Finance, and 20% in HR. At the same time, the mix of human (soft) skills employers value is being rewritten: AI Literacy, Human-AI Collaboration, Human Judgement, and Precise Inference are among the fastest-rising capabilities, signalling that as AI handles more technical execution, employers are recalibrating what they expect people to bring.

How Is the Builder Role Itself Being Rebuilt?
Even the premium AI Builder role is being rewritten from the inside. GenAI-native skills are surging — LLM fine-tuning (+142%), agentic orchestration (+128%), and retrieval-augmented generation (+116%) — while pre-LLM practices are declining, led by manual data labelling (-44%) and on-prem GPU administration (-35%). The reskilling pressure falls hardest on manual, pre-AI builders, but the pattern points to a role being rebuilt rather than replaced. Meanwhile, compensation is steepening with seniority: AI/ML Engineer pay rises roughly 2.6× from early-career to 10-plus years, and employer type opens a further gap, with product-engineering firms paying up to 2.0× more than IT-services players for the same senior roles.
