Dreaming of being a doctor - but think it's too late? New U-M program could help you prepare

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Whether you're nearing graduation, or have already embarked on a career, you may wonder if your lack of science training and experience means it's too late to fulfill your dream of becoming a doctor.

But a new program at the University of Michigan Medical School could help. Designed for college graduates from non-science disciplines, it offers the preparation it takes to become a strong candidate for medical school.

The 14-month post-baccalaureate program, launching this May, is called Postbac MEDPREP. The deadline for application for the inaugural class is April 6.

The non-degree program includes:

• rigorous science coursework from U-M faculty, taken with a group of peers
• dedicated faculty advisors and support for application to medical school
• experiential learning opportunities in the U-M health care environment
• "Foundations for Aspiring Physicians" course with Medical School faculty
• in-depth preparation for the MCAT and admissions process

The new U-M program is the only post-degree program in the state offering career-changers such rigorous training, structured preparation, and dedicated advisors. It's the only program in the country offering comprehensive MCAT preparation in partnership with M Prep, a company started by a U-M medical student that offers online test preparation and content that is integrated with the program curriculum.

Upon successful completion, every participant will come out of the program ready to apply to U-M or other top medical schools nationwide. High-performing participants may even be chosen to apply for accelerated "linkage" admission to medical school while still taking part in Postbac MEDPREP, allowing them to become medical students soon after completion.

"This is the ideal program for a motivated non-science graduate who is ready for an intensive program at a high level," says program director Matthew Wishart, Ph.D. "We're especially interested in those who have already sought experiences to help and serve others, and who are committed to begin formal preparation for a career in medicine."

Applicants should have had a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in college, and should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
