DTE Energy Employees and Foundation Give $420,000 to Food and Shelter Organizations Serving Those in Need
DETROIT, Jan. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy employees and the DTE Energy Foundation last month contributed $320,000 to help the hungry and homeless through their annual charitable fund-raising drive. DTE Energy employees gave $120,000 during the six-week campaign, which the Foundation matched with an additional $200,000.
The Foundation also awarded special grants totaling an additional $100,000 to support five organizations that operate shelters in Detroit – the Detroit Rescue Mission, Cass Community Social Services, COTS, Neighborhood Service Organization and the Salvation Army, Eastern Michigan Division.
With hunger becoming a serious and growing problem in many communities, the employee fund drive focused on raising funds for regional food banks and organizations providing those in need with shelter from the cold. Fifty-nine nonprofit organizations statewide benefitted from the campaign, including:
-- Salvation Army, multiple locations
-- Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS), Detroit
-- Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Detroit
-- Gleaners Community Food Bank, multiple locations
-- St. Martin Lutheran Church, Port Huron
-- Forgotten Harvest, Inc., Oak Park
-- Macomb Food Program, Clinton Township
-- Mel Trotter Ministries, Grand Rapids
-- Family Counseling and Shelter Services of Monroe County
The fund-raising drive was in addition to the company's annual United Way campaign. DTE Energy employees and retirees pledged nearly $1.6 million to United Way, which was matched by the DTE Energy Foundation with an additional $750,000 for a total of more than $2.3 million.
The DTE Energy Foundation is the philanthropic arm of DTE Energy, continuing the legacy of community support and involvement of its principal operating subsidiaries, Detroit Edison and MichCon.
