Eagle Hospital Physicians Evaluates Strategies for the Modern Hospitalist Program
White paper presents hospitalist best practices for improving key metrics by which hospitals are evaluated
CHICAGO, March 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The challenges, risks and rewards of operating a modern hospitalist program are the topic of a new white paper developed by Eagle Hospital Physicians. "The Keys to a Successful Hospitalist Implementation" is available for download starting today in conjunction with the American College of Healthcare Executives' (ACHE) 2015 Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Chicago March 16-19. "The most successful hospitalist programs are built on more than the strength of their physicians," said John Johnston, MD, senior vice president of Eagle Hospital Physicians, which develops and supports hospitalist physician practices for hospitals. "They are driven by carefully assembled teams and deploy best practices and standards that can ensure success in the fast-growing hospitalist market. As leaders in the market, we have developed the white paper to share our approach in hospitalist management."
The white paper highlights how hospitalists and their teams can improve the key metrics by which hospitals are ultimately evaluated: average length of stay (ALOS), Emergency Department (ED) throughput and patient satisfaction.
For example, the white paper gives practical advice on how hospitalists can make a difference in improving patient satisfaction scores. Dr. Johnston suggests, "Hospitalist groups will typically train their physicians to take time with patients, speak to them at eye level whenever possible and in general engage them on a personal level. Here again, hospitalist 24/7 availability can help, providing attention in a way that isn't practical for the patient's usual primary care provider."
Johnston and other Eagle representatives will be attending the ACHE Congress and will be hosting a reception to discuss such issues as the increasing role of the hospitalist in today's quality care model, building collaboration between the Emergency Department and Hospital Medicine and using telemedicine to deliver specialist care to rural locations and other facilities.
