ELISA Expands Open Source Ecosystem for Safety-Critical Software

Cregit and stress-ng bring new capabilities for code analysis, testing and system reliability to the ELISA community

• The ELISA Fund is expanding its open source ecosystem with two new projects under its umbrella: Cregit and stress-ng, adding complementary capabilities spanning code analysis, testing and system reliability.
• The additions expand ELISA's role in the ecosystem, bringing together technologies that address different parts of the software safety lifecycle.
• The ELISA community will be at Open Source Summit Europe in Prague on October 7-9, where attendees can learn more about the new projects at the ELISA booth and hear from members and contributors share their expertise and real-world experience in the Safety-Critical Software track.

PRAGUE, Oct. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Open Source Summit Europe – The ELISA (Enabling Linux In Safety Applications) Fund, an umbrella organization focused on enabling the use of Linux and other open source software in safety-critical applications, today announced the addition of two projects – Cregit and stress-ng – expanding its ecosystem of technologies supporting software development, testing, analysis and assurance.

As software plays a growing role across automotive, industrial, aerospace and other sectors where safety and reliability are essential, organizations need tools that address challenges across the entire software lifecycle. Bringing these complementary projects together under the ELISA ecosystem creates more opportunities for developers, maintainers and industry stakeholders to collaborate on real-world challenges, including code analysis, testing and system reliability.

"Building safer software requires collaboration across the entire development lifecycle, and open source gives industries a way to tackle those challenges together," said Kate Stewart, Vice President of Dependable Embedded Systems at the Linux Foundation. "The addition of these projects broadens the range of practical technologies the ELISA community can collaborate on while creating stronger connections between developers, safety experts and the industries putting these tools to work."

Cregit and stress-ng each bring distinct, complementary capabilities to the ELISA community. Cregit helps developers analyze the history and evolution of Linux kernel code, while stress-ng provides hundreds of stress tests for evaluating Linux system behavior, reliability and performance. Together, they broaden ELISA's range of technologies available through the ELISA community while giving each project space to pursue its own technical goals and community growth.

"Cregit and stress-ng bring valuable technical capabilities and expertise to the ELISA community, while complementing the work already happening across the project," said Philipp Ahmann, Chair of the ELISA Project Technical Steering Committee. "By bringing projects with different areas of focus into the same community, we can make it easier for developers to discover, use, and contribute to open source technologies that support the development of safer and more reliable systems."

On October 5-7 at the Linux Plumbers Conference in Prague, the ELISA Project will help lead the Safe Systems with Linux Microconference, bringing together Linux kernel maintainers, developers, safety architects, and industry stakeholders to advance approaches for requirements traceability, testing, and documentation in the Linux kernel. ELISA members and community leaders will contribute sessions on defining Linux kernel requirements and test specifications, building on the project's work to develop structured, machine-readable approaches that can support safety-critical use of Linux while complementing existing upstream development practices.

On October 7-9, the ELISA Project will be at Open Source Summit Europe in Prague with a booth where attendees can meet ELISA community members, learn more about the project and its growing ecosystem, and explore opportunities to get involved. The Safety-Critical Software track will also feature several ELISA community members and contributors sharing their expertise and real-world experience across safety-critical development, testing, tooling and assurance.
