Elsevier and Australasian Research Management Society Honor Promising Young Scientists for their Work in Academic Research

15 Young Scientists Announced as Recipients of the 2013 Scopus Young Researcher of the Year Awards

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, and the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) honor the academic research achievement of 15 young scientists at the 4^th Scopus Young Researcher of the Year Awards.

The award ceremony, held on September 13 at the Adelaide Convention Centre in conjunction with the ARMS 2013 annual conference, was attended by guests representing Australia and New Zealand's top scientific fraternity, including guest-of-honor, Ms. Leanne Harvey, Executive General Manager of Australia Research Council, who was one of the award presenters.

Recognizing the increasing contribution of the Australasia research community to world science, Elsevier first launched the Scopus Young Researcher of the Year Awards in 2010 to support early career researchers in their quest to advance the frontiers of science across disciplines.

The 2013 Scopus Young Research of the Year Awards attracted more than 100 applications from multiple premier research institutions across Australia and New Zealand. Applications were judged by independent panels of subject experts for each of the award categories.

The fifteen award recipients, representing academic research excellence in five different fields of science, are:

1. Humanities & Social Sciences

• Winner: Dr. Zenobia Jacobs, University of Wollongong
• First Runner-up: Assc. Prof. David Revalds Lubans, The University of Newcastle
• Second Runner-up: Assc. Prof. Scott David Brown, The University of Newcastle

2. Physical Sciences

• Winner: Prof. Bryan Gaensler, University of Sydney
• First Runner-up: Prof. Michael Breadmore, University of Tasmania
• Second Runner-up: Prof. Matt Alistair King, University of Tasmania

3. Engineering & Technology

• Winner: Dr. Da-Wei Wang, The University of Queensland
• First Runner-up: Dr. Qiaoliang Bao, Monash University
• Second Runner-up: Professor Zaiping Guo, University of Wollongong

4. Life Sciences & Biological Sciences

• Winner: Dr. Barry William Brook, The University of Adelaide
• First Runner-up: Prof. Sean Richard Connolly, James Cook University
• Second Runner-up: Dr. Suresh Mathivanan, La Trobe University

5. Medicine and Medical Sciences

• Winner: Assc. Prof. Jodie Louise Simpson, The University of Newcastle
• First Runner-up: Prof. Steven Allender, Deakin University
• Second Runner-up: Dr. Enzo Porrello, University of Queensland
