Elsevier Announces Launch of Program to Include Cited References for Archival Content in Scopus

Scopus Cited References Expansion Program ensures cited references going back to 1970 will be added to pre-1996 Scopus content  

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced that Scopus has launched its Cited References Expansion Program to include cited references in its database going back to 1970 for pre-1996 content.

In addition to increasing the depth of Scopus' scholarly content, including cited references for pre-1996 content will make citation data more accurate, therefore expanding the ability for users to perform long-term, extensive bibliometric and historic trend analyses. Moreover, author profiles and h-index counts of researchers who published articles prior to 1996 will be more complete.

"Over the course of 10 years, Scopus has increasingly become the abstract and citation database of choice, not only among researchers, but also among those who evaluate researcher performance and the impact of scientific output," said Cameron Ross, Vice President of Product Management for Scopus at Elsevier. "The Scopus Cited References Expansion Program will make it possible to more thoroughly measure impact; conducting scholarly trend analyses will now also be possible for pre-1996 content."

Wouter Gerritsma, Information Specialist and Bibliometrician at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and long-standing Scopus customer, said, "Research funding organizations often require overviews of academic track records of grant applicants. Scopus will now be able to provide this information for researchers who published before 1996. With the expanded citation data available, senior scientists will have a single comprehensive source that covers their research career in its complete form."

By 2016, an estimated 8 million articles will be enhanced to capture cited references for pre-1996 content; this improvement will first become evident in Scopus in the fourth quarter of 2014.

The content added as part of the Cited References Expansion Program is included in the standard annual subscription fee.
