Elsevier Celebrates 25 Years of Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy with Art Exhibit in New York

Dr. Frank H. Netter's medical illustrations to be showcased at NYU Langone Medical Center, March 18 - April 30
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced that it will celebrate the 25th anniversary and newest edition of Dr. Frank H. Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy with an exhibition of his paintings, and pieces by other medical illustrators working in his tradition at NYU Langone Medical Center. The exhibit, School of Netter: The "Michelangelo of Medicine," is open to the public starting today through April 30, located in NYU Langone's Medical Science Building Gallery.
Dr. Netter had deep roots at NYU School of Medicine. In 1927, he enrolled at the medical school, where he later began creating medical illustrations as notes in his classes. Professors and other students noticed his detailed illustrations and encouraged him to pursue art. Even though he received his medical degree there, NYU is also where his parallel career began as a medical illustrator.

Netter's most famous works evolved over several decades working for CIBA Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis) where he depicted the human body in both health and disease. His illustrations, which are now published by Elsevier, are available in print, online, and mobile, helping educate millions of medical students and health professionals.
For more than 50 years, Netter has been celebrated as the foremost medical illustrator of human anatomy. The "School of Netter" exhibit celebrates Netter's legacy with a selection of his own paintings (on loan from Novartis), as well as illustrations from over a dozen current artists carrying on the Netter tradition. The show includes paintings by Carlos Machado, a physician-artist and Chief Contributing Medical Illustrator to the just published new edition of the Atlas of Human Anatomy, as well as pieces by several other leading medical illustrators and the finalist and winning entries from the Netter Atlas Medical Illustration Contest, held last fall.
NYU Langone's Medical Science Building Gallery was established in 2008 to exhibit the works of artists who explore the relationships between art and human biology. Sponsoring between six and eight exhibitions yearly, it showcases medically themed contemporary art within the unique context of the Medical Center.
