BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Operators at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant safely brought the facility's Unit 1 back online at 2:27 p.m. ET Monday after employees worked through a water pump issue. Feedwater pumps provide water to the steam generators.
The unit was taken offline Saturday, April 14 at approximately 1:30 p.m. ET in accordance with nuclear procedures and processes.
"The Vogtle team did an outstanding job safely bringing the unit back online," said Plant Vogtle Site Vice President Tom Tynan. "The key to our success was a team effort of the Vogtle employees, with excellent assistance from Georgia Power and the entire Southern Nuclear fleet."
All Plant Vogtle safety systems operated as designed, and operators responded as they are trained in a professional and safe manner. Southern Nuclear operators are knowledgeable, experienced, dedicated and highly trained.
"Throughout the issue, nuclear and personal safety was always at the forefront of our efforts," Tynan added. "I want to thank our employees and partners for doing a great job in a safe manner."
Plant Vogtle's Unit 2 continues to produce electricity safely and reliably at 100 percent power.
