Esker Foundation announces new exhibitions Landon Mackenzie: Nervous Centre + PROJECT 35

CALGARY, Aug. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - Nervous Centre presents a significant selection of works from the last 20 years by Vancouver-based artist Landon Mackenzie. Continuing her abstracted study of cartography to map out human systems of movement, thought, and convergence, the exhibition will present new work, rarely seen drawings, and several of her better known large-scale abstract canvases. A diverse range of public programs will accompany this exhibition, including several talks by the artist, lectures by Dr. Shepherd Steiner, Dr. Andrea Protzner, and Dr. Benedict Fullalove, and a tour of Inglewood by Iris Taylor. On September 29, five unique soundscape compositions by composer Dennis Burke will be added to five of Mackenzie's large-scale paintings. Mackenzie and Burke will be present to discuss their unique collaboration, followed by the unveiling of the Nervous Centre catalogue.
Project 35, a touring project from Independent Curators International (ICI), is an evolving exhibition of 35 single-channel video works selected by 35 international curators, each of whom has chosen a work s/he considers vital for contemporary art audiences across the globe. Project 35 draws in ICI's extensive network of curators to trace a complexity of regional and global connections among practitioners from places as varied as Colombia, the Congo, and the Philippines, as well as to demonstrate the extent to which video is now one of the most important and far-reaching mediums for contemporary artists. Presented at over 30 institutions around the world, this is the first showing of Project 35 in Canada. Project 35 will be presented in four chapters, each containing 8 - 9 videos; Chapter one, September; Chapter two, October; Chapter three, November; Chapter four, December/January.
Project 35 is a traveling exhibition produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York. Landon Mackenzie
Mackenzie has built an impressive body of work and is known for her large-format abstract paintings. Her work has been exhibited in over ninety exhibitions across Canada and internationally, and is collected by many museums including the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery. She began her education at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax (1972-1975), and received her MFA at Concordia University (1976-1979). Mackenzie has received numerous awards and is an influential artist and educator. Based in Vancouver, she Professor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
