Mr. Spence has been writing about ETFs, personal finance and financial markets for more than a decade. He previously wrote the widely read ETF Investing column at MarketWatch.com for seven years. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune and other major newspapers.

He first began writing about ETFs in the late 1990s at IndexFunds.com and IndexUniverse.com. He has assisted in the production of three books on investing with ETFs, including "Active Index Investing," the definitive guide to how index-based strategies are used to enhance performance, reduce costs and minimize the risks of investing.  He is a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont, and holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of San Francisco.
