Staples can be disposable (made of plastic) or reusable (made of titanium stainless steel), and can be used for both open and laparoscopic procedures. Laparoscopic staplers are normally longer and thinner in order to accommodate minimally invasive surgery. Endosuturing techniques are achieved via the "needle-thread" method of manual knotting. Compared to other methods of wound closure, endosutures ensure secure fastening of the tissue; however, knotting can sometimes be cumbersome for new surgeons. New devices in endosuturing will eliminate manual tying, offering a fast and accurate mechanical knotting system. Surgical clip appliers are used to mechanically apply ligation clips. Clip appliers are used predominantly during cholecystectomy procedures, applied to either end of a section of malignant tissue in order to minimize bleeding. The shaft of the clip applier is normally inserted through a trocar, and the jaw at the distal end of the device holds the clip.
The growth of the closure device market has been driven by the increasing number of laparoscopic procedures. Bariatric surgery in particular will drive the closure device market, as certain procedures require extensive use of closure staples, such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. The growth of this market is limited by the use of advanced energy devices such as bipolar and ultrasonic instruments, which can cut and close vessels without the use of standard closure devices. Closure devices continue to be required for reconnecting tissue during the procedure and for closing incisions made by trocars.
