The longtime reproductive endocrinologist personally knows the struggles of infertility and will lead a multidisciplinary team for couples trying to start a family
LAKE FOREST, Ill., Aug. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eve Feinberg, MD, knew the signs. She was, after all, a physician who specialized in treating infertile patients. And here she was trying to start a family and after years of minor health issues, all of those negative pregnancy tests started to make sense.
So the roles here flipped. She wasn't solely a doctor who treated patients unable to get pregnant, she also stood alongside them as a woman who was struggling to start a family herself. For years, Feinberg lived these two roles seamlessly -- both treating patients and herself undergoing fertility treatments. Today, when she tells her patients she knows what they are going through, they believe her. When she shows them photos of her daughter, now 10, and twins, now seven, her patients know what's possible.
"When I was trying to get pregnant, there were days I wanted to give up, but I kept asking myself, 'How could I help others if I quit?'" said Feinberg who has gone on to help couples conceive more than 1,000 babies. Starting on August 29, 2016, Eve Feinberg, MD, will bring her personal experience and her more than 16 years of professional experience to her role as the new medical director of Northwestern Medicine Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Services Highland Park. The new north suburban clinic will include a full staff and is essentially an extension of the comprehensive Northwestern Medicine infertility care from downtown, said Jared C. Robins, MD, chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
"Almost one in eight couples have difficulty getting pregnant so there is an incredible need for high quality fertility services in the suburbs," said Robins, who is also the medical director of fertility and reproductive medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "We are bringing Northwestern Medicine's world-class care to where our patients live and work. With Dr. Feinberg, her patients have not only an expert they trust but also a top researcher and a leader in the field who offers the full range of fertility services."
Unlike other clinics in the area, this new Highland Park clinic has the full resources of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, home to one of the nation's premier infertility treatment centers.
Dr. Feinberg is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. She completed her residency at the Feinberg School of Medicine and her fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. She has also published more than a dozen research papers and is the founder and executive director of the Kevin J. Lederer Life Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to individuals and couples diagnosed with infertility.
"With this new role, I feel like I'm coming home to Northwestern Medicine," said Feinberg, who lives with her family in Highland Park. "My patients will not only have fertility services close to where they live, but access to all the technology and labs downtown and a close collaboration with Northwestern Medicine's subspecialty teams for nutrition, clinical psychology, high-risk obstetrics and complicated reproductive surgeries."
While Feinberg takes her practice and her patients very seriously, she doesn't take herself too seriously. She stays in touch with her patients long after they've moved on. She's active on social media and delivers "Worth the Wait" onesies to new babies of her former patients.
"This might be hard to believe, but I am thankful for my struggles to conceive," Feinberg said. "I have experienced many infertility treatments and I talk to my patients as someone who has been in their shoes. It made me a better wife, mother and, definitely a better physician.
