Event: How Women Entrepreneurs are Revitalizing America

DETROIT, March 11, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Through their research, the NWBC has found that new businesses are an important bedrock of a thriving economy and have in recent years shown themselves to create jobs and economic growth, nationally and locally.

"While we celebrate and document these tremendous strides, we are excited to report that women have played a crucial role in this continued growth," said Carla Harris, the Presidentially-appointed Chair of the NWBC. "All over the country, women are starting businesses two times more than the national average. To the National Women's Business Council, that's not just a trend – it's a movement."

The NWBC is hosting their next public meeting in Detroit, Michigan with a focus on the role that women have played in the local and regional business ecosystem. They will also be facilitating roundtables with local leaders and stakeholders on social entrepreneurship, access to capital, opportunities for women in STEM, and scaling.

"Detroit has built a strong entrepreneurship ecosystem and the city holds an incredible opportunity for women business owners to innovate and lead," said Amanda Brown, Executive Director of the NWBC. "Women are growing successful businesses and achieving their business dreams – they are creating jobs, restoring their community, and strengthening the local economy and we want to shine a light on this important work, while also identifying opportunities for enhancement and support."

According to their 2014 Annual Report, women are launching businesses at two times the rate of the national average, yet they are doing it with six times less capital than men on average. "It is an exciting time as the economy is growing and more and more women are taking the leap to start their own businesses, but there are still critical gaps to fill to fully support women as they launch and grow their businesses. We hope that through listening and sharing our learnings we will be able to make some informed recommendations for women entrepreneurs that are facing the same challenges the women in Detroit are facing," said Harris.

The quarterly meeting is a standard operating procedure of the Council and an opportunity to share with the public the latest facts and information on women-owned businesses.
