Evolution Enrichment Center And NYC Pre-K Site Launched A Unique Reading Program With Multiple Benefits For Children Of Young Ages
NYC middle school students' volunteer program Read to Me reinforces the power of social-emotional interaction with Pre-K and preschool students
NEW YORK, Feb. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Evolution Enrichment Center, a new progressive private Preschool and Early Childhood Education Center on Lower East Side in New York City, pioneered in offering a unique approach to introduce early reading skills to preschool children. The Read to Me program is designed and implemented in partnership with Great Oaks Charter School in NYC. Committed to higher academic standards and deep understanding of social-emotional goals in learning, educators of both schools have partnered to create a collaborative platform for middle school students to volunteer by reading aloud and working with younger students (ages 2-5) once a week.
The Read to Me program is a relationship based teaching and learning experience, where students work closely with trusted peer middle school mentors. Building close relationships between students and older peers is known to be the best practice to early childhood educators. The goal of the program is to increase early academic skills and readiness of preschool students for further success and higher academic proficiency in their future school endeavors. This is done by utilizing engaging hands-on activities in accordance with early childhood best practices. The peer mentors facilitate high order thinking and conversation skill that is not possible with large groups. The Read to Me program results in a higher quality learning environment that stimulates curiosity, exploration, and ultimately learning.
The program has already produced positive results. Jacqueline Wong, Head Teacher in Evolution Enrichment's 2's classroom states that she has observed many cornerstones of NYC academic success, including:
- an increased ability to ask and answer more open ended questions
- developed a sense of their own competence
- develop ongoing, trusting relationships with older children and adults outside the family
"As children grow up, the positive effects of these relationships follow them so they continue their love of school and learning," states Ms. Wong. "These children will be more open minded and emotionally developed, and their academic success will reflect this."
Evolution Enrichment Center is designed to offer a high-quality preschool program with an array of enrichment classes For the Mind, For the Body, and For the Soul. With their community-based approach and stellar professional staff, Evolution Enrichment Preschool stands out among a plethora of other schools in the neighborhood.
