Experience Mexico City Arts And Architecture In New York City

MEXICO CITY, May 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- While the best way to experience Mexico City's vibrant arts and architecture is through a first-hand visit, New York residents – and visitors alike – have the unique opportunity to sample some of the capital city's heritage and culture during two New York City exhibitions this year. Mexico City, a destination with great pride in its esteemed arts and architectural scene, has the honor to be hosted by two remarkable New York institutions: the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG).

Milestones of Mexico City's architecture can be explored at MoMA's Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955–1980 (on display through July 19, 2015) while visitors can learn about the city's legendary figure, Frida Kahlo, and her work at the exhibition FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life at NYBG (May 16-November 1, 2015).

Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955-1980 at MoMA  The exhibition Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955–1980 at MoMA includes works that provide a snapshot into Mexico City's history through architecture. Exceptional spaces that are landmarks of important moments in time, trends and lifestyle of Mexico City are featured at the exhibition, including: the colorful area of Mercado de la Merced; the iconic Museo Nacional de Antropologia by paradigmatic architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez; Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and Ruta de la Amistad (Route of Friendship) a project designed by cutting edge artists in 1968 in preparation for the Olympic Games - a vital moment for Mexico and the world. Today, the Route of Friendship is an open-air museum, enhanced by a variety of activations of cultural and ecological nature taking place around it, which provides just a sample of the many things that can be done within this nonstop arts epicenter.

Arts and architecture enthusiasts will also have an opportunity to learn more about the history of Mexico City at the panel discussion and reception organized by the World Monument Fund (which Route of Friendship is part of) on Tuesday, May 5th: Latin American Modernism at Risk: Preservation Challenges for World Monuments Watch Sites. Javier Ramirez Campuzano, Vice President of Patronato Ruta de la Amistad (established in 1992) will be part of the panel discussion featuring experts and leaders of these institutions preserving Latin American monuments that are included in the exhibition.

FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life at NYBG 
Mexico City is highlighting the richness of its heritage by showcasing the aspects of the destination which inspired Kahlo's work and life—from her garden at Casa Azul to the spirit of the city—as well as modern day art offerings during NYBG's FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life. Visitors to this limited six-month engagement, from May 16 through November 1, 2015, can view a rare display of more than a dozen original Kahlo paintings and works on paper, as well as reimagine the iconic artist's famed garden and studio at the Casa Azul, her lifelong home in Mexico City. Accompanying events invite visitors to learn about Kahlo's life and enduring cultural influence through music, lectures, Mexican-inspired shopping and dining experiences, and hands-on art activities for kids

In addition, NYBG's Visitors Center Plaza will be transformed into a Mexico City marketplace for 30 nights from May through November for festive Frida al Fresco evenings. Ticketed attendees will enjoy complimentary cocktails, live performances, tastings, artisan demonstrations, pop-up stores and other activities as well as a flower show re-creating Frida's garden at Casa Azul and capturing the diversity of Mexico City's flora.
